13.11 FLIGHT DETAILS

This week, we’ll be to re-visiting parts of our last holiday before COVID-19 hit, a trip to the lush and beautiful Tanzania in East Africa! Just like our real journey, this fly-in will be in two parts: the first will be a climb to the summit of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, and the second will be a safari tour of several of Tanzania’s national parks and wildlife conservation areas.

We will depart from Kilimanjaro International Airport (ICAO: HTKJ) and immediately turn onto a northerly heading towards Kilimanjaro. Our flight plan will see as follow the “Machame Route”, the same footpath FactualGull and I used last December to hike 19,300 feet above sea level to Africa’s highest point, Uhuru Peak. During the ascent, we will share many stories about our journey to the summit and the wonderful people we met along the way.

After reaching Uhuru Peak, the second part of our flight plan will see us descend to the town of Arusha then go on a safari across the African savannah to Ngorongoro Crater for some incredibly striking views and unique topology. We will end the tour by landing at Lake Manyara airfield (ICAO: HTLM).

I have selected the Cessna 208 for this flight, a fitting choice since we require an aircraft with a service ceiling of at least 20,000 feet, and Caravans are an incredibly common sight in Tanzania as they are widely used to ferry tourists to safari destinations such as Lake Manyara and Serengeti National Park. For those pilots who join late or need to catch up to the group for any reason, airports en route include Arusha (ICAO: HTAR), and Ngorongoro (ICAO: HTNV).

PLANNING

We will be taking the Cessna 208 Caravan.

Starting airport is TBD. Please load your aircraft 15 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the taxiway or parking.
