FLIGHT DETAILS

DUNE: PART TWO opens only in cinemas on March 1! To celebrate the release of director Denis Villeneuve’s new film from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, this week our Community Fly-In event will use the recently-launched Dune Expansion as we fly the Royal Atreides Ornithopter along the Persian Gulf from Bahrain :bahrain: to Dubai! :united_arab_emirates:

Choosing this part of the world for a Dune-related group flight is no coincidence. In addition to the desert scenery being reminiscent of the planet Arrakis, author Frank Herbert was partially inspired by the culture and languages of the Arabian Peninsula when creating the fictional Fremen people. Additionally, one of our touch & go landing destinations along the route, Abu Dhabi, was used as a filming location during the making of DUNE: PART TWO.

While flying the route, our panel will keep viewers entertained with some Dune-related trivia questions, so you may wish to re-watch DUNE: PART ONE and/or read the original Frank Herbert novel prior to the event.

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file here:
2024-03-01 Dune.PLN (4.2 KB)

We will be starting at OBBI. Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

AIRCRAFT

Recommended aircraft: the Royal Atreides Ornithopter, of course! However, we know this aircraft doesn’t appeal to everyone, so if you’d rather fly something else, you can take any aircraft of your choice that can maintain a cruise speed of 225+ knots.

MULTIPLAYER SETTINGS

Please adhere to the following settings so you can see everyone / be seen by everyone.

Variable Setting
Server SE Asia
Multiplayer All Players
Live traffic As preferred
Weather Few Clouds
Time of Day Daytime

It is advised in this flight to turn off both aircraft collisions and terrain collisions. If you do crash, you can use “slew” mode to join the pack. If the pack will be too scattered before the first stop, we will use slew on a defined point to regroup.

COMMUNICATION

To communicate with others, a voice channel on the "Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord” at https://discord.gg/msfs will be available to join.

LET’S FLY

This is meant to be a fun and informal flight. Everybody is welcome, no matter the amount of experience.

Just picked up part 1 of the movie this weekend, and enjoyed it been itching to fly this helicopter that I have started to call “the dragonfly”.

Not much of a helicopter pilot myself, but will gladly try this for sure. I know you can’t autopilot the helicopters so I’m sure you’ll get to see some really really bad flying on my behalf

Unfortunately I am unable to join the flight this evening, but I look forward to some thrilling footage of the ornithopters!

This was the most fun to fly till now. Going low and fast while trying to stay in formation was fun.
Tried to dive through the “sail holes” in the Burj al Arab.
Think I did it 4 times out of 7 or something.

It was good to join the pack again after missing the events for a few weeks. I actually felt bad for not knowing the trivia questions after having a Dune watch party with my friends last week. Unfortunately I had a big framerate drop with other ornithopters around so it gave me a hard time when I tried to land on the Burj Al Arab (I retried it after the event ended and I managed it, although I did not land in the middle of the helipad, but I’ll take it).
