FLIGHT DETAILS

This week is the anniversary of not one but TWO groundbreaking flights from the history of aviation! On June 14-15, 1919, pilots John Alcock and Arthur Brown of the UK successfully completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight. Flying a modified Vickers Vimy, their flight departed from St. John’s, Newfoundland and landed in Clifden, Ireland.

Nine years later, on June 17, 1928, famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart became the first woman to travel across the Atlantic by air in the Fokker F.VII “Friendship”. This flight also departed from Newfoundland and landed in Burry Port, Wales. Although Earhart was a qualified pilot at the time, she only participated in this flight as a passenger with pilots Bill Stultz and Lou Gordon at the controls. Not wanting to go down in history as merely a passenger, this flight inspired Earhart to go on and pursue many of her famous feats of women’s aviation.

This week’s fly-in will see our group fly between the two landing sites of these historic early transatlantic flights: Clifden to Burry Port. However, we’re also trying something new this week! @Pieter2427 will be flying an alternate flight plan from New York JFK across the pond to Burry Port in the Darkstar (with a touch and go landing in Newfoundland to commemorate Alcock & Brown and Earhart’s departure point). Anyone participating in the fly-in is welcome to choose whichever of the two flight plans you would prefer to follow.

Option 1: Clifden to Burry Port

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file below:
2023-06-16 Transatlantic.PLN (3.1 KB)

Option 2: New York JFK to Burry Port (Darkstar)

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file below:
2023-06-16 Transatlantic (Darkstar).PLN (2.0 KB)

We will be starting at EICD (Option 1) or KJFK (Option 2). Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

AIRCRAFT

Recommended aircraft: for Option 1, we suggest a Diamond DA40NG, Cirrus SR22, Extra 330LT, or any other plane of your choice that can maintain a cruise speed of approximately 130-140 knots. For Option 2, we highly suggest the Darkstar, but if you want a true historic experience of flying an early transatlantic crossing (and have 20+ hours of free time), you’re welcome to fly the Fokker F.VII “Friendship” or Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis.

MULTIPLAYER SETTINGS

Please adhere to the following settings so you can see everyone / be seen by everyone.

Variable Setting
Server SE Asia
Multiplayer All Players
Live traffic As preferred
Weather Few Clouds
Time of Day Daytime

It is advised in this flight to turn off both aircraft collisions and terrain collisions. If you do crash, you can use “slew” mode to join the pack. If the pack will be too scattered before the first stop, we will use slew on a defined point to regroup.

COMMUNICATION

To communicate with others, a voice channel on the "Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord” at https://discord.gg/msfs will be available to join.

LET’S FLY

This is meant to be a fun and informal flight. Everybody is welcome, no matter the amount of experience.

I’ll be away due to commitments during this event , I’ll catchup twitch video the next day :+1: , have fun

I’m ok for Darkstar flight next week if able :joy:

My computer translated the start time on this invitation to mean 2:00 PM Bogota time, but that would be 1900Z (20:00 British Summer Time). But 1800Z should translate to 1:00 PM Bogota time, right? Can you please confirm what is the intended start time in UTC / Zulu time, and in BST / London time?

The first post (right at the top) say 19:00 BST which is 18:00 GMT or 18:00z. I make that 13:00z in Bogota.

I’d love to take the new 182 RG for option 1. :crossed_fingers:

Hello my fellow aviators,
So I’m going to do both flight A and B and post’em as per usual on my youtube channel and I’ll link to them here as well.

As an added BONUS the way things are looking right now is I’ll be also joining you guys tomorrow during the flight, the downfall is I don’t have a headset so I can’t voice chat with you guys. I’ve bought headsets and had issues and documented my issues on my channel (if you’re interested)

The one thing I wanted to let you guys know is if you see me flying with you I believe you’ll see my gamer tag just know that I’ll also be streaming it too and it will end up on my YouTube channel as well. I wanted to let you guys know because of certain YouTube policies that have been mentioned to me since I’m a streamer that I didn’t know previously.

Many thanks, @AndyClark20
Since I’m in the “Bogota” (GMT -5 hours) time zone, for some reason at the top of my screen the forum webpage is displaying the start time as 14:00 - see the attached screenshot. However, “Bogota” does not go on Daylight Saving Time in the summer so I’m wondering whether the time zone converter assumes it goes one hour ahead during summer time? @SeedyL3205 do you know how the time zone conversion is done on that webpage?
But anyway, since Andy confirmed it is 19:00 BST on his screen then yes, I will rely on it really being 1800Z = 13:00 Bogota.
Looking forward to the flight!

I can tell you from the time of this post it’s in just under an hour and a half.

Those are the two I did on my own, I swear my Auto Pilot was drunk when he took over flying the DarkStar

I’m looking forward to flying with you guys today, just a friendly reminder I’ll be streaming the event as well to my Twitch and later my youtube I know one of my fellow aviators will also be doing that too.
Sadly I won’t be able to join you in terms of voice chat, I’ve had my fair share of headset problems so I don’t have one.

It should work great! I was thinking about grabbing it myself. But I’m also a sucker for sales… We’ll see. I have a bit to think about it

Something wasn’t working or I couldn’t figure something out cause I couldn’t find you guys. Maybe I’m doing something wrong on the xbox but I know I couldn’t find out how to set it’s server

Very cool meeting up with the speedyboys near the end. Nice to have multiple options for flightplans that meet up. You could have one some day with gliders or helicopters for anyone that is into that, with an alternate flight plan for GA or otherwise, and have them all end up in the same place or meet up somewhere.
