FLIGHT DETAILS
This week is the anniversary of not one but TWO groundbreaking flights from the history of aviation! On June 14-15, 1919, pilots John Alcock and Arthur Brown of the UK successfully completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight. Flying a modified Vickers Vimy, their flight departed from St. John’s, Newfoundland and landed in Clifden, Ireland.
Nine years later, on June 17, 1928, famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart became the first woman to travel across the Atlantic by air in the Fokker F.VII “Friendship”. This flight also departed from Newfoundland and landed in Burry Port, Wales. Although Earhart was a qualified pilot at the time, she only participated in this flight as a passenger with pilots Bill Stultz and Lou Gordon at the controls. Not wanting to go down in history as merely a passenger, this flight inspired Earhart to go on and pursue many of her famous feats of women’s aviation.
This week’s fly-in will see our group fly between the two landing sites of these historic early transatlantic flights: Clifden to Burry Port. However, we’re also trying something new this week! @Pieter2427 will be flying an alternate flight plan from New York JFK across the pond to Burry Port in the Darkstar (with a touch and go landing in Newfoundland to commemorate Alcock & Brown and Earhart’s departure point). Anyone participating in the fly-in is welcome to choose whichever of the two flight plans you would prefer to follow.
Option 1: Clifden to Burry Port
Pilots on PC can download the .pln file below:

Option 2: New York JFK to Burry Port (Darkstar)
Pilots on PC can download the .pln file below:
2023-06-16 Transatlantic (Darkstar).PLN (2.0 KB)
We will be starting at EICD (Option 1) or KJFK (Option 2). Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.
AIRCRAFT
Recommended aircraft: for Option 1, we suggest a Diamond DA40NG, Cirrus SR22, Extra 330LT, or any other plane of your choice that can maintain a cruise speed of approximately 130-140 knots. For Option 2, we highly suggest the Darkstar, but if you want a true historic experience of flying an early transatlantic crossing (and have 20+ hours of free time), you’re welcome to fly the Fokker F.VII “Friendship” or Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis.
