FLIGHT DETAILS

Third Party Developer Just Flight recently released a new complex airliner for Microsoft Flight Simulator, the BAe 146. We know many of you in the community are excited to fly one of the first “study level” airliners to be released for MSFS, so we’re planning this week’s Friday Fly-In to feature this new aircraft. IMPORTANT NOTE: you do not need to purchase the Just Flight 146 Professional to participate in this event. You can choose to fly any other plane with a similar cruise speed (suggestions below).

To help make the 146 Professional addon as realistic as possible, Just Flight had hands-on access to a real BAe 146 (registration number G-JEAO). This plane is now retired from service and is on display to the public at the de Havilland Aircraft Museum in Hertfordshire. Our flight this week will see the group depart from EGVN, fly over this museum, then turn northward and make our way to Aberdeen, Scotland. Along the way, we will complete a few touch & go landings and pass many handcrafted POIs from World Update III: UK & Ireland.

Additionally, Just Flight has generously donated one (1) 146 Professional to give away as a prize to a community member during this flight! The winner will be selected randomly, and you must be present at the time of the drawing to win.

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file here:
Community Fly-In Friday 2022-05-06 UK.PLN (5.5 KB)

We will be starting at EGVN. Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

AIRCRAFT

Recommended aircraft: Just Flight 146 Professional, Cessna Citation, Airbus A320, L-39 Albatross, F/A-18 Super Hornet, or any other plane of your choice that can maintain a cruise speed around 400 knots.

It is advised in this flight to turn off both aircraft collisions and terrain collisions. If you do crash, you can use “slew” mode to join the pack. If the pack will be too scattered before the first stop, we will use slew on a defined point to regroup.

COMMUNICATION

To communicate with others, a voice channel on the "Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord” at https://discord.gg/msfs will be available to join.

LET’S FLY

This is meant to be a fun and informal flight. Everybody is welcome, no matter the amount of experience.

Can’t wait! The prize is for PC only via the JustFlight store, is that correct?

I have cracked open the flight plan and have laid out the waypoints for any Xbox pilots who want to recreate this plan for themselves. Remember that you will need to input the Departure and Arrival airports first, then you can add the other waypoints to the plan. You can input the decimal LAT and LONG into the search bar on the left to get the custom waypoint you can add. You can search for the named POIs using the same search box. You can adjust the cruising alt by hitting the NAV LOG button on the top right under the flight conditions box.

I’m excited about the flight plan this week as it will take us over the area in Scotland where I lived from 1985-1987! I was a US Marine stationed at RAF Edzell. This base has a lot of fascinating history behind it, from its beginnings as an air field in WWII to an electronic spy base throughout the Cold War. Although decommissioned in 1996, you can still clearly make out many features of the base, including the old runways and the circular field where the giant Wullenweber array used to be. It looks very realistic in MSFS, as you can see in this screenshot I took on a previous flight:

For those who are interested, here is the flight plan with RAF Edzell added as a custom waypoint (N56° 48’ 33.46",W2° 36’ 19.95"):

It’s not far off the main route so we can catch back up with the group easily. There’s also a castle in Edzell, though I don’t think it’s marked as a POI.

Cheers!
