FLIGHT DETAILS

March 8 is both International Women’s Day and part of Women of Aviation Week! To mark this occasion, our Community Fly-In this week will be a historic re-creation of the first two stages of one of the most important events from the pioneering days of women’s aviation history, the 1929 Women’s Air Derby!

Joining us on this flight will be four fantastic women from the Microsoft Flight Simulator community: our own CM @Jummivana plus Twitch streamers @AlyKatz, @FactualGull1036, and @Heidiological, all of whom are either IRL licensed pilots or student pilots!

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file here:
2024-03-08 Women’s Air Derby.PLN (4.2 KB)

We will be starting at KSMO. Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

AIRCRAFT

Recommended aircraft: Beechcraft Bonanza, Beechcraft Staggerwing, Beechcraft Baron, Diamond DA62, Cessna Caravan, or any other plane of your choice that can maintain a cruise speed of ~170 knots.

Please adhere to the following settings so you can see everyone / be seen by everyone.

Variable Setting

It is advised in this flight to turn off both aircraft collisions and terrain collisions. If you do crash, you can use “slew” mode to join the pack. If the pack will be too scattered before the first stop, we will use slew on a defined point to regroup.

COMMUNICATION

To communicate with others, a voice channel on the "Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord” at https://discord.gg/msfs will be available to join.

LET’S FLY

This is meant to be a fun and informal flight. Everybody is welcome, no matter the amount of experience.

Learned a lot today during this community flight dedicated to International Women’s Day! As usual a fun flight. Looking forward to the upcoming leg of the community world tour!

I learned a lot today & thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t manage to get set up in time to fly, but was watching immensely.

I’m trying to locate the book that Jayne was talking about, hoping to find it on amazon for my kindle. It does sound like a good read.

Had a lovely time flying with you all, very interesting hearing all the cool facts and information about that historic flight. Swapped to the Avro Vulcan a little later and had a fun time trying to stay in formation, with surprising success :stuck_out_tongue:

Hello @shysuzie79,

The book is called “Fly Girls” by author Keith O’Brien. The amazon.com link is below. If you’re located in a non-US country, you can probably find it on your localized Amazon site.

Thanks Seedy, very much appreciated.

Unfortunately, I am from a non US location, over the sea in the UK. Currently the only copies that can be purchased in our local amazon site are used. Still trying to find the best deal, possibly heading to book store but I’ll definitely be purchasing at some stage.

I’m Scottish, for anyone else reading this post afterwards.

Update - Bought last copy from a store for ÂŁ6.20.
