I also agree. MS has demonstrated once that they can produce a revolutionary weather system. Unbeknown to us why they ditched it at SU07, but I think MS are the most likely ones to bring it back and improve on it if they decide so.
Yes, thats the sad part. We that actually liked and enjoyed the system we had are now stuck with the old system because we have suddenly no other options because there is no other options. This were both the first time and last time we would see someone try this. Because no other would be brave enought to test something new.
I really hope they do Then they can release the API for those that preffer METAR blending systems

I noticed a change in this week’s development update:
It’s back “Under Investigation” since the expo. Thanks, guys!
I just had a thought. The assumption has been that they cannot open up the weather due to contractual obligations with Meteoblue. But if that contract was for one sim, and not for another, or a new contract has been drawn up for 2024, this might just be possible. And a possible additional reason for 2024’s existence.
I think the big issue has been with the particle engine. The way it’s engineered, they can’t get the visibility under 3 miles without it looking funky.
Without revamping that, they’re not going to be able to customize weather or allow 3rd party injection.
Not through any manual means without cheating with ground level clouds. But I have had some live weather experiences where visibility was down to around 100ft. Granted that was a hurricane, but still. The engine can do it, we have no access to direct controls.
So you have a choice between 100 rvr and VFR.
I would not consider that a functional visibility scale.
I never said it was to be fair. But in live weather I have had a landing where only half the runway was visible, the far end shrouded in cloud. We don’t have an interface where we can set a particular value, and can only fudge it by the placement of clouds, which is fiddly, imprecise, and ultimately guesswork with that UI we have access to.
I think you’re misunderstanding. You have only 2 options. 0 visibility or 3 miles visibility.
There’s nothing in between. So yes, you are seeing obscured runways. Because it has clouds on them.
The particle engine can’t go lower than 3 miles. It will need a complete rework.
That’s why I mentioned clouds as a fudge, not particulates. The question is will they rework it for 2024? They seem so focused on adding activities, missions etc. I hope they have devs. left over to work on core systems too.
Right. But I’m saying the whole sim operates the same way.
My impression is that they are not touching the weather. Which is why I am sounding the alarm.
We’re getting live boat traffic, but not a reworked weather engine. Unacceptable.
It would be a fair argument that the people working on the boats, which to be fair was farmed out anyway, are not working on weather simulation or flight model fixes….but it does beg the question “So who IS working on weather, and atmospheric simulation?”
You hear the same rationalizing from the Star Citizen crowd. Feature creep while the core game suffers.
Guns or butter, my friend. Resources are being diverted to unessential projects.
I concur! I think MSFS should approach weather similarly to other parts of the sim, that has seen massive success with the introduction of 3rd party devs like WT. Something similar for clouds and weather would do massive things for sim realism, I anticipate.
Even if they brought in a third party dev they would be facing the same memory and computing constraints that Asobo have to work under. Honestly, if you don’t like current live weather then use a preset or set up your own with the tools provided.
The presets don’t have near enough control or accuracy to be effective for instrument flying.
As Flyprdu stated, presets are not at all a viable replacement. The live weather used to be much better before SU7, not ideal, but still better than what it is today. That shows that there is massive room for improvement within the current constraints. With MSFS 2024 those constraints are likely lessened. No excuses.
