OpenXR Pimax and other non-Meta HMDs

It’s possible that this has already been covered elswhere in the forum. However, Matthieu Bucchianeri, the developer/author of OpenXr Toolkit and Pimax-OpenXR has posted an important message on GitHub. I have not provided the link as it may be against forum rules.

I noticed other links to his GitHub pages on the forum, so here goes: Quickstart | OpenXR Toolkit

Well if this does happen, Meta will watch Quest 3 (and 4) die a very quick retail death.

Thank you for sharing info about Meta harmful actions toward the gaming community.
I plan to purchase a VR headset and I already know which company I won’t be supporting.
Yep, you guessed it - no Quest for me.

This message needs to be picked up by all the VR/HMD and VR
game reviewers apart from VR Flight Sim Guy etc. on YouTube.

I’m not defending all this but it’s a pretty old, well know issue.

Meta set to oculus as the default openxr runtime is required for many newer meta-link store apps. It’s also required to play openxr apps like msfs2020/2024 unless you set SteamVR as your openxr runtime (and then get worse performance).

You can’t play any meta-link (Rift) store games with SteamLink because it uses SteamVR as it’s openxr runtime. You can kinda get around this by using the Revive app, but this doesn’t always work well. Revive has also been used in the past to allow meta-link store to allow Vive and Index headsets to run these. Still a bit hit and miss, esp. with controller bindings.

Most work ok with Virtual desktop because it uses a modded Revive app together with SteamVR. I don’t think any work with VD’s VDXR runtime. What doesn’t work well with VD are most VivePort apps. This is because the developer hasn’t been able to make a separate games tab for these. Some can be injected, but not very many.

When using Link or Air Link many newer Steam apps allow you to select either Oculus or SteamVR runtime options. I’ve always found that the Oculus options work best with Meta headsets. But, if you have a strong pc with lots of ram, there’s not a lot in it imho.

For me, knowing these limitations, I tend to only buy meta-link apps that are crossbuy with the standalone Quest store. Otherwise, I mainly buy PCVR apps on Steam (esp. when they are on sale). I also have a VivePort annual subscription and I think I get pretty good value out if it with many PCVR apps and have gotten quite a few free games over time thanks to periodic deals.

So, this really hasn’t changed all that much over time. While it would be nice for all headsets to be able to access all meta-link pcvr apps using VD or SteamLink, this probably isn’t going to happen for a long time, if ever. If this makes Meta headsets less attractive to you then just vote with your wallet I guess. Cheers.
