OpenXR Toolkit (upscaling, world scale, hand tracking...) - Release thread

I’m not using MR and do understand this function is “as seen” so my post is an observation/guess on my part in case it’s useful in some way. :slightly_smiling_face:

I am also having this issue.

Just gave turbo mode ago while on the ground and got a CTD within 10 seconds. Also got a CTD next restart of MSFS going into VR. Running OXRTK in safe mode allowed me to go back in and I had to reset defaults to get it working again.

Oh well, it was worth a shot

This was on Win11 22H2 SU11 beta.

OK I did some more testing today with a couple of strange effects. CTD if starting my VR software after the flight was started everything appears to work as it should if I load up the VR software before starting the sim. Turbo does give me an increase of around 20 FPS but I have now deselected it as my system runs well without Turbo. Worth a try.

I understand the frustration but you’re also not playing the same sim you were 40 years ago.

Granted things should become easier as technology progresses, and it will, but right now things are progressing quicker than ever and you are on the bleeding edge.

Name another point in time when technology like this would be available, then you have immediate access to a forum of people, some of whom are developing tools to improve the experiences for everyone, often for free.

The sim in it’s vanilla state works.
The external apps are no doubt supporting add-ons that provide additional features which Asobo has no control over.

EDIT: The VR shaking mess is one of the biggest immersion breaking, nausea enducing things and I’ve suffered from it plenty myself. It is fixable, list your equipment and we can probably get you sorted out.

40 years of MSFS…wow, that’s some very early beta testing  How’d you get in? :))) Just kidding. Like @Jonny5Alive6618 said…Let us help you get the most out of your hardware, mostly people on this forum are very glad to help a fellow simmer. I am getting a bit too old to be tinkering with things as much as i had to with msfs, and unfortunatelly it’s not going to happen without extra tools, but…it is what it is.

This thread is for support, answering questions, reporting issues with a very specific tool that nobody is forcing you to use.

Your criticism isn’t constructive and I’ll nicely ask you to take it somewhere else (eg: create a thread of your own).

Thanks.

I wasn’t going to reply to your ranting, but I feel I need to so this may benefit others, not necessarily you -

When I first started with VR in flightsim on The Other Sim, my experience was a shaking, awful mess. With the help of others in the flight sim community and weeks - maybe months - of tweaking settings, testing, re-tweaking, re-testing (repeat), I got that sim to run buttery smooth in VR and never looked back.

This past year, when I made the switch over to MSFS, I went through the same thing - first load in the sim in VR was a shaking, stutter-y disaster. Here’s what I didn’t do - rant and complain about what a mess the sim and VR was. What I did to was reach out with questions to the VR simming community for help. More tweaking. More testing. Repeat… It took a few weeks, but what I ended up with is a sim that runs smooth in VR. I don’t even have the latest/greatest hardware. With the help of the great people in the VR sim community and some good-old-fashioned determination I am now enjoying an amazing experience. I have been trying to share this with others by streaming these VR flights to show how great MSFS (and yes, That Other Sim) can be in VR. I don’t usually post the link to my channel in these posts, but I feel I need to in this case for you (and, more importantly others who might be on the fence about VR) can see how great it is. https://www.youtube.com/@vrsimpilot (Note - I get nothing from this channel other than having fun sharing VR with others. Mods feel free to take the link out if this is inappropriate.).

Gryper, if you want, we can try to help you. I, and others in this community, have helped numerous people go from frustration to a great experience. But you have to be willing to put in the time and effort and be willing to reach out for help.

I’ve put 40 years into this (simming experience). I’m posting on one final idea elsewhere here that hopefully will work with my Rift S, and if that fails, I’m out until which time this stuff is actually ready. I’m done beating beating myself up and requiring the need for multiple additional apps to make this work right. And I am an end-user. I’m not really wanting to become a near-computer engineer in order to use a flight sim. If I wanted to spend my life fixing flight sims, I would go to a flight sim tech school.

Maybe I missed it further up in the thread, but what are the symptoms besides shaking? Stutters? Low FPS?

What are your hardware specs?

What are your settings in:
Oculus App (render resolution, refresh rate)
MSFS (are you running everything on high/ultra? What about your LOD settings? TAA or DLSS? DX11 or DX12?)
Oculus Debug Tool
Are you using OpenXR Toolkit?

Honestly, we can probably help you. VR takes time to get running properly. Trust me, I know. It took weeks to get it working in MSFS and that was after already being an experienced VR user coming from The Other Sim.

Let us help you.

It’s ready now but it won’t work by itself.

I read your other post. I don’t think the adapter you talk about exists or would solve your problem if it did.

Is your VR setup working normally outside of MSFS?
Is your MSFS setup working outside of VR.

Let’s establish some baselines here. Youre probably one or two settings away from ‘normal performance’.

But there is a way to run this sim with minimal effort: just get an XBox, it can run the sim almost as well as PC and no fuss is required. That is if you want to use a TV or a monitor, just as you have been doing for 40 years. Easy.

Now, if you want to use VR - this is still an “emerging technology” and is nowhere nere what it should be to become just another everyday gadget. By trying to sim in VR, you are becoming an “early adopter”, which in every technology is a very thorny path. You will spend many hours trying to get your system to perform well, and there will be many annoyances and disappointments. But that is your choice to make. Yes, we all wish things would just work. But with VR - no such luck. You have to invest in high-end hardware and read a lot to balance your configuration.

That said, with a proper hardware MSFS actually works well just off-the-shelf without the use of any additional software, just watch one video about VR settings and set them accordingly, that’s it. All additional software, like Open XR Toolkit, is totally optional - it allows you to squeeze just a bit more performance, add better sounds, bring charts, better maps and a scratch pad into the VR cockpit, and so on. They are not required to enjoy the sim in the form that all sims were offering for the last 40 years, only in a much more beautigul form. Anything extra you use is your choice, so no complains. For example, I built a whole Motion VR Cockpit with many controls to increase my enjoyment of the sim. But I’m not complaining about a large amount of tweaking and several extra apps I have to run to enjoy it. It comes with the territory. If you just want to push power button and fly - better stick to pancake simming on XBox. It’s still better by an order of a magnitude than anything that was available for the last 40 years.

To clarify OpenXR Toolkit purpose: it’s not required for MSFS to run, and run reasonably well. but if you want to tweak it and try to optimize your PC performance with MSFS in VR - it can help, especially if you are GPU-limited. But unless you know what options and technologies those settings cover - it’s not going to be useful for you. As a rule of thumb, I suggest you use Foveated Rendering onthe Quality/Wide preset, and you can lock Motion Reprojection to 30 or 45 FPS. If you find MSFS DLSS useful - you can just left everything else as is, or not even use the toolkit at all.

what he said…except…i would honestly disagree on the toolkit part. No toolkit = no good vr experience. Toolkit really adds so much to the performance and quality of life that there’s just no comparison. And i’d also dare to say that Toolkit doesn’t really require a lot of tinkering at all. One of us could give out the basic initial parameters and it would already boost the vanilla experience significantly. Praise the holyToolkit

Toolkit should have a price tag in my opinion. Somewhere like 20$ at least. It’s worth it. I’d pay for it without hestitation.

Yeah I don’t know why anyone would choose not to use the Toolkit. It provides so many benefits at this point. The fact it’s free is just amazing.

Yes, but the two statements are not self contradictory: yes, you can run VR without OXRTK and have a good VR experience - just not at full resolution  The trick is that if you want to squeeze the best possible experience out your hardware, and are a power user not afraid to do tweaking and testing - you need OXRT to reach that goal and have the best visual quality possible.

BTW I automated all side software by creating a .bat file with menu prompts, text-to-speech prompts (connect VR, power up the amp) etc. So it asks me if I want to reconfigure scenery presets, launch motion and controllers, launch Voice Attach profile, run extras etc. and it does all that for me, and assigns CPU affinity, kills unnecessary processes etc. So the launching process is automated and painless. Though it took some time to achieve that.

The disable mask (ham) feature alone should make everyone want to use the toolkit. It feels to me like the field of vision got a big free increase as soon as I switched it on.

Yes, that’s true! I can confirm that. I have 3D-printed rhw shallow face bevel (or what is it called?) for Reverb G2 to maximize field of view, and disabling mask definitely has a very noticeable effect, and is completely free in terms of performance. Also FFR (Fixed Foveated Rendering) with Quality/Wide preset is almost comletely unnoticeable while it give you a free GPU performance boost, which is always welcome.

All the external apps tethered add the layer of depth to flight simming.
It’s like turning on all the ingredients to make a great cake.
If you don’t want so much complexity and tweaking go hop on the console version.
This sim wouldn’t be half the fun without tweaking and app tethering for that image sweetspot.

I also get a ~20fps boost with turbo mode ON. From 45 to 64 without touching anything else.

5800x
32go DDR4
4090 RTX
Quest 2

No FSR
No FFR
SS 1.3
DLSS Quality

But I’m using ASW and it says this is not compatible so I sadly won’t use it. :sob:

It disables ASW, so it looks like you were likely locked to 45, and 64 should be your framerate WITHOUT ASW.
