I use it almost exclusively, joined Virtual Airline and everything. Sometimes it’s a challenge, especially in VR. But there are so many great VR tools available now that it’s totally enjoyable. I’ve been using the VR panels from Flightsimulator.me and a new VATSIM VR interface called VSR from Github (still in dev but excellent).
Cheers,
Use it all the time, 6,400+ hours on the network. I really enjoy it. Events are really fun, you’ll come across tons of aircraft and controllers. Using model matching is the icing on the cake.
VATSIM is the icing on the cake. It makes simming as real as it can get. There is nothing quite like a busy Vatsim event.
Used it every flight since signing up about one and a half year ago.
Enjoy it very much.
I like it and have used a fair bit in the past but right now doesn’t fit my schedule.
I don’t have heaps of time for simming and need to often pause, quit during a flight, use time compression, use a non-standard runway or taxi route etc. I understand most of these can be done on VATSIM but it adds a layer of complication I just choose not to deal with right now.
I’m still super new to VATSIM. I fly mostly in Hawai’i where I live, and we don’t get a ton of coverage out here, as compared to say … Boston lol.
DO IT. You’ll be nervous. You’ll mess up. You know the best part? As long as you’re not invading some big event on your first flight, I’m 99% sure the controllers will be able to take the time to help you. You know how I know? Because that’s what they’ve done for me so far. All the rumors I heard about VATSIM controllers being jerks really seems to be unfounded. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences so far.
What I tried to do (and need to continue) is check to see if there’s VATSIM coverage for my flight. If there’s not, I fire up “PRO-ATC” - man, it’s VATSIM minus the humans Voice recognition and everyting.
I’d like to use VATSIM but I don’t feel like I am there just yet. What’s the best way to learn correct ATC communication? I’ve tried Pilot2ATC and I feel like maybe that’s a good way to learn without upsetting an air traffic controller? What do you guys think? How did you learn correct phraseology?
You could try this. I found it very helpful. WINGS Introduction - Boston Virtual ARTCC (bvartcc.com)
Connect to Vatsim at a busy controlled airport (at a terminal, remote parking but not on the rwy threshold - even put “Beginner observing ATC communications” in the remarks block in the Flight Plan) in the region you would mostly be flying in and just listen. You will quickly pick up the sequence and what’s actually being said.
There are slight differences between regions around the world. Vatsims Pilot learning centre and You Tube can also be of help.
Once you start with Vatsim you will never go back to the ingame ATC.
It is really good. The first time you’ll be sweating, but it will become more easy and very very enjoyable soon!

This.
Two rules : don’t start on the runway, and don’t learn in some big event or busy time.
Have a look on Vattastic and find somewhere where there’s a controller controlling a smaller airport, maybe with three or four flights booked tops. The controller will have plenty of time to help you, and you if you do make a mistake it won’t matter. Take off, fly around a bit, and land back at the same airport. He/She is probably a learner themselves and will be grateful for the practice, traffic and more tolerant of mistakes.
Vatsim is magic !!! Love it
Love it!!!
I actually started with VATSTAR and went through their training program, which also includes introductory flights in a controlled environment etc… (all free).
From there I started using Pilot2ATC to get the phraseology down and then migrated to VATSIM.
I use VATSIM for all commercial flights and when flying GA I typically use Pilot2ATC (as those flights are typically in remote areas without VATSIM coverage).
Agree,5ish months on vatsim and I still mess up
Some controllers can be a little mean at times..
Example 1: I was flying into PHL and messed up one heading..it didn’t ruin anyones expereince but the controller yelled “B1350,Learn your aircraft fly heading (idk)..”
“Philly Approach,B1350..We know how to fly our aircraft”
Trial and error BABy!!! Hop on the network and learn as you go
You should give PilotEdge a try and make a mistake on there
I cannot,too young (13) @skypilotYTS
Had an account since 2011. never picked it up as i wasn’t that interested. Not for a lack of knowledge in pilot communications or intimidated by it. Just wanted to get up n fly.
Only started doing it in the last month or so
Wondered where it was all my life.
