Optimize laptop or ditch for desktop?

Need some advice from the VR crew. Since getting a Reverb G2, I’m flying 100% VR now, but using my Legion 7 laptop (16ITHg6) which has a i7/11800H processor, RTX 3060, 16Mb DDR4 and 1TB SSD. I’m using OpenXR and have optimized my settings to the point where the sim is playable and still visually acceptable. I’m getting 30 FPS through most of the flight and it drops down to 25 just prior to landing. If I fly the same plan under the same conditions without VR on, I get about 56 FPS. Reliability has been excellent since ditching Steam VR (constant CTDs).

In VR, my GPU is running flat out 99% - 100%, while the CPU is about 25% - 30%.

Before I drop a few grand on a desktop, I was wondering just how much better the image quality would be given the small sweet spot in the G2 (probably not much), though the FPS would surely be better.
I don’t know if adding another 16G of DDR would do much for the laptop’s performance, but I could try that, I suppose.

As a replacement, I was thinking maybe a 3080TI, 32 Gb DDR and sticking with an i7, but liquid cooled. Read some horror stories about AMD GPUs and VR (don’t know if that’s still an issue or not).

I fly mostly GA aircraft (Milviz 310R and King Air 350). I also enjoy the DC-6, 247D and BAE 146, but those less so with VR (too many buttons to capture, 247D nothwithstanding).

Appreciate any guidance/suggestions. Thanks!

I run G2 RTX3080TI 12900 32 GB, I don’t have a comparison regards GPU, but you may want to hold off till the August update to see if DLSS brings any improvements, plus I imagine GPU’s will drop on price further.

Desktop. I’m still surprised a laptop can run this thing full out without melting.

It does a surprisingly good job, considering. With the OpenXR Companion helping out (and other settings optimized from all the Youtube videos), I’m always above 25 FPS and often around 30 with some altitude.

Just for fun, I maxed out all the VR graphic settings. Was suprised to get 16 - 19 FPS but that dropped to 12 or so flying low over cities. Not usable really, but visually pretty stunning. Will likely go the desktop route soon.

Desktop, no question. There’s no point having a laptop unless you NEED it to be portable. More expensive, less performance, runs hotter…

So I went the desktop route with a pretty decent pre-built. Was super impressed with the Legion gaming laptop that I went with a Legion desktop:

Lenovo Legion 7i Tower

  • i9 12900K
  • RTX 3080
  • 32G DDR5 /4800
  • 2TB storage (1TB SSD + 1TB HD)
  • liquid cooling

On sale for $2399 and in stock. It is amazing. After a week of tweaking, with mostly HIGH and some ULTRA settings, plus OpenXR at 92% scaling, the visuals are stunning in my Reverb G2 and I’m getting 35 FPS with the lowest 30 coming in to a busy airport in VR. Definitely worth it!

Nice one, sounds amazing! Will be doing the same (but upgrading) once 13th Gen and RTX40xx come out
