Orbx’ Grumman TBF Avenger

Hopefully! Just asking since so many just post here and magically assume that a developer is aware. Always helpful to report to the source!

That’s true! I must admit I’ve been guilty of that before.

Flew the mfs2020 version for a couple of hours. To expand the list of bugs …
1 Prop animation in idle is awefull. Much too slow, you think starter is still turning.
2 No animation of magneto switch, have to guess what position is active.
3 Visual of radial engine is strange, silver outlines on cylinder ribbs.
4 Cylinder head temp does not fall back from high to low, although cool flaps are open&low power setting&high speed in descent
5 tool tipps do not show position e.g. “lock wings” lever locked in up or down position?
6 no documentation provided, no pdf included or available on website
7 ok for me: only 1 (one) livery offered
Hope ORBX will provide a significant patch for both fs 2020 and fs 2024!

Really don’t want to rain on the parade here but there’s almost zero chance OrbX will ever fix any of these issues. As others mentioned above, their model is ‘kick it out and never look back’. The best we can reasonably hope for is that some other more reputable vendor also starts selling it. For some inexplicable reason they are awful at addon aircraft support even though in my experience the rest of their products are just fine and do get updates.

Tends to?
They have completely abandoned every single aircraft they released.

Ha! I was leaving open the possibility that there’s one I overlooked!

Such a shame as the Avenger is such a great aeroplane.

Hopefully it’ll get some fixes but I’m not holding my breath.

Have been waiting for a TBF in either 2020 or 2024 for a while. My Dad was the gunner in the TBF. It was near the end of WWII and initially was in the pilot training pipeline, but with the war dying down 1/3 of the group stayed with the pilot training, the others were offered aerial gunner or the straight to the fleet. He choose the aerial gunner.

He all ready had his PPL , my granddad ran the Civilian Pilot Training Program at the university of Minnesota, so my dad soloed before he got his driver license. The TBF had rudimentary controls in the position behind the pilot by which could be used in case the pilot was incapacitated. Dad stated his pilot let him fly using those controls a few times and he commented on how heavy on the controls the plane was.

Anyway, glad to get a representation of the plane in the sim. From the reports presented here, sound like it should be okay for a sentimental journey “flying” a plane in which my dad served.

It’s right on the product page for both FS2020 and FS2024 versions, below the video, where it says “Documentation.”

Here’s the direct download links:

I concur with all the issues that have been noted. On top of that, the markings on the real Avenger are somewhat close to the WWII aircraft, but Orbx couldn’t even get the markings from the restored bird right. Just lazy.

AvAngel isn’t terribly impressed either

Personally i don’t rate her either and she is on 2024

what’s that got to do with it? The plane’s marketed as working with both 2020 and 2024.

A lot of stuff is supposed to work on 24 but doesn’t in fact 24 is not working well on 24. There have also been reports that its working better on 2020 ( as does most things) than 2024. Does seem odd that someone is trying to do a review of a product on a sim that itself isn’t working properly you never know if its the sim or the plane

You have a point - sort of.
On the other hand it’s the developer’s job to make the plane work in the new sim and that may mean different versions.
There are enough 3rd party planes (and much more complex ones than this Avenger) that work perfectly in 2024.
So considering the devs track record with aircraft I feel inclined to shift the blame on the plane.

In fact, there are very few “3rd party planes (and much more complex ones than this Avenger)” that display a pilot or crew in the external view.
The new beta MSFS 2024 has changed this to displaying a pilot in “3rd party planes (and much more complex ones than this Avenger)” but not the copilot or any crew. So half a fix.

Thanks for the links! Highly appreciated.

Ok. I can accept this to be a MSFS problem. But if THAT were the only thing that was wrong with the plane, then I’d probably accept it grudgingly - even for the price. I normally don’t fly the plane from the outside after all. But reading this thread and watching the two reviews (and knowing previous ORBX abandonware planes) I won’t touch the Avenger. There are enough really good warbirds out there.

But assuming the FS2024 Avenger is native 2024 SDK, I have a number of native third-party planes that don’t have a pilot issue in FS2024:

  • Inibuilds T-33 (more complex than the Avenger)
  • CAS J-3 Cub (similar complexity, given its exhaustive configurability)
  • Bluemesh Castel glider
  • Deejing RV-7

All of them display pilots. And it appears that the wacky bug that made pilots appear hanging from the bottom of the Asobo Bonanza has been fixed in SU1.

So hopefully all of this means that the missing pilots in FS2024 and FS2000 Showcase view will be fixed in an update. (Along with tweaking the FS2024 flight model; the Inibuilds T-33 feels better in 2024, but the Avenger’s flight control sensitivity feels more authentic in 2020.) An update will go a long way to taking the conversation away from the lack of updates for the PAC P-750 and Optica and putting the focus on the quality of the actual plane.

Had a look at the texture layout, but alas, everything is mirrored, apart from the nose.

So no camo schemes, just basic symmetric paints, and then rubbish around with decals, groan…

So no paints from me I fear, just not worth the hassle, for now.
