“Every General Aviation pilot’s dream… to fly the famous FISK approach into OSHKOSH, the biggest fly-in event in the world.” Over 10,000 airplanes over 10 days in real life. Here, we recreate the mood, the procedure, the approach and the atmosphere in Microsoft’s Flight Simulator.
All contestants will have to register for the event and then it will be a custom group of all of us for the competition without the distractions of saboteurs. A registration form will be posted here once I figure that out. If anyone would like to suggest how to setup a registration form, please contact me by DM in my discord channel.
The multi-page NOTAM document will also be posted here and be similar to the one we used on our channel when testing a few weeks back. This will have the procedures, frequencies and marking system explained.
The basic rules are simple and close to the real thing:
Follow the exact approach to FISK with proper spacing, altitude and frequencies.
On landing, hit your designated colored DOT. With both main wheels on the dot, 5 points, with variations of that with lesser points.
You can leave the airport according to NOTAM and come back through FISK for another attempt. We will take 3 our of 5 landings at both 36 and 27 for final scores. (or 2 out of 3) TBD
I will need to hear from volunteers for spotters and controllers. We will train you for these positions. It is not hard. We need 6 controllers ( 3 and 3 to spell each other off).
Here is a preparation stream from a past broadcast on my channel: Twitch
Can this also be made into a landing challenge or “bush trip” ? I know the real challenge in the approach is the crowded skies, but it may also serve people to familiarize themselves with the view of the arrival from the air to ground visual waypoints.
Looking forward to this. Thanks @HowardElvis for organizing.
Since we won’t have the variety and livery colors as we do IRL, should we expect to be identified by callsign or msfs username instead? It seems like this would be REALLY hard otherwise.
just as a friendly heads up:
Groups in msfs multiplayer are limited to 6 people. So unless you’re less than or exactly 6 contestants you need to be on live or all mode.
I am not the right person to ask, but that’s the same question we had when we tried to get our first ever msfs community stream going. So, everyone you see regularly on the community streams doesn’t know.
I suggest you try to get this question into one of the Q&A’s with the devs.
I certainly would, were it not that there are so many other more important things that need to be asked, with a far higher priority.
My past experienec of getting question into the Q&A sessions has not proved that successful, and any that do get there, typically the answers are technically unsatisfactory.
Nice of you to post this @davux3 but keep in mind this one was made by PilotEdge and EAA for the event last year. They deserve credit for making it all happen. They supplied their own paid controllers for the realism of the event. I will provide a NOTAM of our own, based on the PilotEdge format. It will be posted here the first week of February. The registration form will be posted here too at that time.
I want to be one of the VFR controllers in the tower. Whom do I contact or how do I make this known?
I have watched Oshkosh two years in a row with three screens prior to the cov19 closure. Loved it all day long.
I have heavy traffic VFR tower experience although over 40 years ago. Currently a vatsim tower controller.
An opportunity to work this field for the event is a dream come true.
@PlushySatsuma8 I got this message. I am the one to contact. The registration form for all participants goes live today. But I have you listed as a controller and will be in touch with anyone who wishes to join you. If you know of others who can do this, let me know and we will be in touch with them too.
Thank you for your service in advance. We need a few more like you to make this a truly authentic event.

Wow what a nice welcome. Thanks Howard. Now for the hard part. I only have 9 days left to configure everything. I just download a bunch of “stuff” to install. Last night I was able to configure my tower view with the 2020 drone and today discovered flighttracker.tech (wow). Even the taxi way alphas. I don’t yet use euroscope but rather VRC with vatsim. However, I setup my tower view with xplane, xpilot, and vstars proxy. Today I hope to setup tower view with vStars proxy, 2020, and vpilot. If that works I got something going good here. The next step would be tower view with flighttracker.tech as my quasi radar client for tower only operations. Being old I am getting confused with all the discord servers. I see I am currently in the forums here. Flightsumulator discord channel ??? is where I will find you and continue with arrangements? OR here in the Forums.flightsimulator.com. Please advise.
Also if I get lost please help me find my way back. thanks. Advice readily accepted and even a “don’t do that” would be helpful when needed.
I am going to wait twenty minutes for a replay before closing this. Just in case you got something for me.
Hi @PlushySatsuma8 , no need to wait in the forum. As we “mention” your handle, you will get notified in your hidden email address. By posting your email here in the forum, you chance a lot of spamming now. We need to discuss the initiatives you have mentioned. We had planned to use visuals for airplanes and MS Flight Simulator only. We have one person working on using all simulators for the event but we have only tested with visual “rock your wings” controllers and drone cams on our simulators for ATC. We use discord for audio frequencies.
So we can continue with details on my discord. No need to back and forth here in this public forum for controllers. We will be having a “controllers meeting” and practice session before the event. Getting everyone with their time zones working together is the challenge.
Here is the invite code to the my Discord channel for ForderLearnToFly server.
My Discord name is: Howard#6941
Just click this link to join my general channel: ForderLearnToFly
(this goes for anyone reading this post)
Then we can “direct message” or DM each other, once there, for private conversations.
We need to discuss your ATC options you have mentioned or tested. They might be better than we were testing.
