Harrisburg airport…one of the few airports in the US with a TRSA.
I flew over this a few times and immediately noticed the remains of an old airport right across the road there. Turns out it was Hershey Airpark (KHER) that closed in 1981.
Wow…I didn’t notice that!
When I was 12 and on a vacation with my family I took a sightseeing flight in a Piper Tripacer at that airport. Probably around 1962? I think it was my first time in a GA plane. Thanks for bringing back that memory.
Wow!..Visited Hershey Park and Amish PA after wedding…in early 70’s…but ouch! I’m dating myself…lol.
Was that for airport or Hershey after that?
Oh, that was just a little trivia about Harrisburg airport. It belongs to something called a Terminal Radar Service Area, which is like a hybrid between a class D airport (where you only talk to a tower) and a class C airport (where you talk to a tower and approach control). In TRSAs, VFR traffic doesn’t need to talk to approach. They’re this weird exception to the rule and there are only a few of them in the US. I just think they’re neat because they’re very rare.
