I fly exclusively in VR so I am GPU limited. I have a MSI 3080 Trio that is not currently overclocked. Temp sits at 79c when under max load. I’m wondering if it’s worth overclocking. What would we be looking at in terms of an increase?
only one way to find out With 79C you might have some headroom, but don’t expect wonders.
Also, MSFS is pretty sensitive to overclocks (or, MSFS hits the overclocks particularly hard), so you might introduce instability.
Just try it, and if it doesn’t work, roll back to stock clocks.
79C is a way to hot to then OC it..
my 2080 stays around 55-60C OC’ed..
3000 series take way more power than the 2000 series. 79 degrees is still within spec. Not much thermal headroom left, but there is still some.
okay doke
It’s true. Also, the MSI 3080 Trio specifically runs hotter than other cards in favour of quieter fans. A more aggressive fan profile would reduce temps to be below 70c.
roger that, im using the trio 2080 - OC @ 2040-2060Mhz depending on what is running..
not had chance to Buy a 3080 yet, but the Msi Trio it will be or the EVGA.
edit:
Using the Valve Index..
In my experience it’s just not worth it. You might be able to eek out a few more frames, but at the expense of shortening you cards lifespan and dealing with system stability issues.
If you customize your fan curve your card will get higher mhz… I have a 3080 as well and that made a huge difference on the card. The algorithm for the core clocks on the 30 series is highly dependent on lower temps. 79c is probably throttleling down your card a ton. Trying to achieve 68c with the fan curve and you’ll see the core speed sky rocketing. Memory overclocking will give you a few extra FPS and is easy, just do plus 500, every card can do that easily. I’m telling you this just so that you’re taking advantage of your card and not killing it with those high temps, VR in this sim is highly unoptimized and nothing you do with your card will change that. Not to mention it doesn’t even look great… you have to super sample it to make it look a little better and that of course kills your FPS. I personally don’t do VR on the sim even though I have a rift, it’s not worth it.
Thanks for that tip. But are you sure 79c actually throttles the card in the sense that it reduces FPS?
It throttles your clock speed, like let’s say your card can do 2000mhz it will lower itself to 1800 something or whatever the algorithm dictates for the temps it’s seeing, by keeping the temps lower the algorithm will push your card to higher MHz.
I have the Evga 3090 hybrid ultra and there is a few frames to gain for sure.
I have some results to share with you. This was my first time OC’ing a GPU so it was new to me (and interesting).
First I made a more aggressive fan profile, temps seem to stay under 70c now.
I did +30 core and +400 mem. So far it appears to be stable based on Timespy.
I tried pushing past +400 mem but Timespy started giving a worse score, so I stuck to +400.
Two questions:
-
I did not increase my power and temp limits. Should I do this? Power limit can be increased to %102 from %100, and temp limit to 92c from 83c.
-
During Timespy test, I did not notice my core clock boosting very often. It ranged from 1815 to 1845, very rarely would it hit 1900+. Do you know how I can improve this? Temps were below 70c during the test. Maybe it is related to my first question? [Edit] Nevermind, in MSFS it is consistently hitting 1965 core clock.
[edit] This is probably the first time I hear my GPU fans running, they were so quiet before Doesn’t matter anyways when I have my VR headset on.
I would not be comfortable with 79 degrees at the first place. Check your chassis and fans… Silicon degrades over time, when heated too much (and i have no idea what that means in a scientifical meaning) It degrades faster, so… as i try to run my gpu’s for years i don’t see the point. Even if you don’t argue with the silicon degredation, when oc’ing your fans spin @ much higher rates and often you cannot change the fan’s on your gpu in case a bearing breakes down.
And don’t forget that modern gpu step up the clock automatically to some extent when under high load…
I would suggest to tune your settings for VR, the sim scales great, but it’s a bit trial and error… see what works for you!
Increasing your power to 100 and the temp to the max in your setting will give you better results. Break the link between the temp and the power, that link throttles your frequency as well. But sounds like your GPU isn’t bad, you could probably go higher on the core. By increasing the core frequency you’ll push past the 1900 limit. However, depending on how good your card is you may have to add more power.
