PC review: Pacsim Salt Lake City KSLC

Test machine specs: MSI X670E, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX, 48gb RAM

My second Pacsim scenery (taking advantage of their summer sale!). Is it a more solid offering than their latest release, KGSP?

DETAIL

In the pre-release and promo threads posted by Pacsim, there was a lot of talk about what appeared to be overly sterile textures on show in the supplied images. Thankfully, those images weren’t really doing the airport justice and the texturing of the buildings (certainly airside) is first-class. Yes, some textures undoubtedly look a little clean and cartoon-like in places, such as the entire terminal roof and parts of the multi-storey car-park, but these aren’t areas you’ll be diligently scanning from the flightdeck of a parked airliner. Airfield ground textures are excellent throughout and it’s only when you move to the landside areas that relatively low-res satellite imagery can be found (not sure whether it’s default or a custom overlay). In summary, the entire airside area is pretty darned impressive, with very little to moan about. There’s a ton of custom GSE clutter, all of it very high quality. The Delta and Skywest hangars, cargo facility and FBOs all look decent, and it really is only the peripheral buildings of this sprawling facility that have been paid less attention than everything else (which is fairly typical of the sim’s larger third-party airports). Unfortunately I include the tower in these more neglected areas — it’s not terrible but it is done using noticeably lower-res textures.

Despite being devoid of people the terminal interior is very good (the window tint looks spot-on), however as you progress through its exterior landside areas the quality of the detail and texturing takes a tumble. As mentioned above, a heavy reliance on satellite imagery, with quite a number of smaller buildings which the dev has chosen to leave as flat, 2D imagery. At least there are plenty of modelled vehicles in these areas but they are in the company of the odd satellite-generated example. The landside area is a little disappointing, given the quality elsewhere, but there is just about enough custom modelling to prevent it being a deal-breaker.

Put simply, the airside areas of this airport mostly tick all the boxes; and where they don’t, you probably won’t notice anyway. If you’re not too fussed about a fully custom-modelled landside, again, most boxes nicely ticked. Personally, I’d like to see a bit more work landside, including improvements in the texture quality.

One thing the dev has mentioned is accurate airline parking, so I was surprised to see a UPS 767 land and taxi to an airbridge-equipped passenger stand. Is this a mistake on their part of just one of those sim bugs we’re all now accustomed to? Answers on a postcard…

PERFORMANCE

Surprisingly good, even with pretty dense FSLTL traffic, but it must be borne in mind that I’m running quite a high-end machine.

VERDICT

Pacsim’s KSLC strikes a good balance between putting detail where it most matters, and omitting it in areas less frequented by virtual pilots. I personally think the landside could be better, and some areas of texturing really are quite repetitive and bland (e.g. the terminal roof). But that shouldn’t take anything away from what is very clearly a premium product. The airside areas (arguably the most important for the majority) don’t disappoint and the amount of custom apron clutter, stuffed into even the smallest nooks and crannies, ensures the airport feels alive.

The only issue for some will be price. I bought it in the Pacsim summer sale (which runs till 7th July) but at full whack ($26), it really is in the very top cost bracket for third-party airports. There are similarly sized, more detailed airports that can be had for less money… but this is undoubtedly the best version of KSLC currently available for the sim. In other words, if you want a good KSLC, you’ll have to dig deep…

For info, other renditions of KSLC are offered by Salt Lake Sims and Feelthere, and while neither looks as polished as Pacsim’s, Feelthere’s does feature a fully modelled landside (complete with train).

Just to mention, the night lighting is excellent, inside and out.

Now just hoping they update it for free with the finished terminals / jetways. No mention of this yet, and would be a shame if they tried to charge again for the update. Well have to wait and see, but I agree, its a fairly good airport scenery, despite being one of the most expensive out there.

The dev has confirmed an update will be issued once the construction work is complete. He didn’t, however, mention whether or not it would be free to existing owners.

I can’t decide if I should buy this. I love flying KSLC (for some odd reason, I never been there and I’m from Europe), especially Delta routes. But even in the sale it’s expensive (20 euros). more than Flightbeam or FlyTampa without sale. And tbh, it doesn’t look as good as from those other devs! But it’s the only KSLC with the new layout right?

It’s not cheap — and there are undoubtedly better value airports out there — but it is very nice. The texture work on the parts of the terminal you see from the flightdeck are excellent, as are the ground markings. The flaws are mostly landside, and in areas less likely to be seen by pilots. I think it has the feel of a premium product, in spite of the shotrcomings.

It has a great interior too, if that’s your thing.

The midfield terminal extension is modelled, but it reflects the real-life status upon release (i.e. unfinished). Pacsim have said that they plan to update it once all the work’s complete.

How is the FPS holding for you. I find it a tad hungry on resources. I always expect to lose a few more FPS here than in other airports. I can’t fault it on looks though, it’s very nice.

It’s no worse for me that any other airport of similar size/detail, really. Maybe a tad more demanding.

Still deciding whether or not to go for Reno/Tahoe. The modelled surroundings are always a real bonus, I think.

I think I’m using the freeware KRNO. Don’t fly into it much, but the approach from the west is certainly an interesting one!

Re Reno/Tahoe, the surroundings look great but the airport itself looks very mediocre. I think v2 spruced up those surroundings considerably but largely neglected the airport, save for adding custom airbridges.

I bought Reno two weeks ago and am satisfied. However, this is actually due more to the overall package and less to the airport itself. The approach is beautiful, the photogrammetry is very good and the Pacsim buildings in the city complete the picture. The airport itself, however, is actually rather mediocre in parts. But it’s definitely not bad either. I particularly like the ground textures and the clutter. And the performance is also good. The interior is okay but rather basic, just like the landside. And the buildings look too sterile for my taste.

I think you have to decide for yourself if you would like to have Reno as a location. And then you get a satisfactory airport with the Pacsim version. My flight from Seattle to Reno a few das ago was one of the most beautiful of the last few weeks. But if it’s more about buying the nicest looking airports, then Reno is not one of them.

Thanks. The full package would be ideal — that is, a great airport AND great surroundings. It seems your observations confirm my suspicions that v2 enhanced the surroundings far more than it did the airport.

KSLC is a little resource heavy, its probably the heaviest of any scenery I own besides ini’s KDTW. It would be nice if PACSIM would release an update without detailed interiors to help smooth it out a bit, I dont care about detailed terminal interiors, esp if they kill performance.

I decided to go ahead and purchase this. Even though I’m from Europe I just love flying in the US and it came down to the big thing that this is the only accurate version of KSLC. Love it for historic Delta ops in the Maddog.
