PC shutting off

Hey everyone, is there any difference cause for my pc to shut off for overheating? I suspect it was the thermal paste and I change it to a new one. After first test flight my PC shut off in cruise while my temps were around 79C to 84C. Not sure exactly which could be a cause for this. Any idea?

If fans are not spinning, vents are blocked, the CPU/GPU cooler is faulty, thermal paste is old or improperly applied, or if higher voltages and frequencies are used due to incorrect BIOS/UEFI settings or features like Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) on AMD CPUs, heat may not be removed effectively, causing components to exceed their safe temperature thresholds.

You can also consider If the room where the PC operates is hot, the cooling system may not be able to dissipate heat efficiently, resulting in overheating and shutdowns

Is that a laptop driving an external monitor?

No, is a desk computer

Can you give us a more detailed description of the hardware components?

Case and number of intake/exhaust fans
CPU and cooler
GPU
RAM
Power supply

Not at home but I have 3 front fans, 1 in the back and the stock AMD cpu cooler. My cpu Ryzen 7 5700X and a RTX3060, 32GB RAM

Not sure the name of the case but is this one

The 5700X should cool OK with the stock fan. That leads me to believe that it needs to be re-pasted. Having said that, the case looks big enough for a CPU cooler upgrade, and more cooling (without spending money you don’t need to spend) is never a bad thing.

I’d suggest looking at the Thermalright line.

Maybe this one - you can get it for around $35
I had a Thermalright in my 5800X3D system, and it was an excellent cooler.

ETA: Another thought occurred to me. It’s possible (though unlikely) that you have a sensor malfunctioning (which might be reporting a temp error.) It’s hard to know which sensor the warning is coming from. You could download HWMONITOR, which will give you very granular sensor values.

its not a coincidence . this is exactly what happens to me also . from 2 weeks now . i was flying ok till now so something changed . i changed my thermal paste and my temps are more ok but i haven t run the sim yet. im curious .

Will take a look thanks. I was suspecting anything else because the temps in flight were around 80ish so no need to shut off when the protection triggers at 90C+ will take a look on that cpu cooler thanks

I just changed my paste yesterday with the thought that this could be the main issue, temps seems to be lower than before with 88C+ now there’s definitely an improvement now showing 79 to 85C but still shutting off the pc. The weird thing is that this does not happen in Xplane 12

The 5700X does run pretty hot. But 80°C should be well within the thermal limit.

I would suspect a possible issue with overloading the PSU, but the CPU temp warning leads me to believe it is somehow related to CPU temps.

I wish you luck. Keep us informed, please.

BTW…If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard “But the problem only happens in this sim” I’d be a rich man. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Haha will let you know

PC shut downs are almost always caused by a bad or inadequate power supply. Heat related issues usually cause freezing of the PC. Or if it’s a graphic card overheating artifacts on screen with eventual lockups.

As can be seen in the image it does warn about high temperatures in the cpu, afaik amd shut off the pc to avoid overheating. If it would be power issue it wouldn’t show the message

I thought you said you had reapplied thermal paste and the temps were fine? But that the PC still shut down. That in my experience is a bad or failing PSU. Either way good luck and I hope you solve it.

Yeah is weird because thermal paste got replaced but still happens. So it could be the PSU but why does it still triggering high temp cpu message

Did you check if there’s a thin protective film on the bottom of the CPU cooler’s contact plate? Sometimes people forget to peel it off and that stops proper contact and cooling.

Check the CPU temperature directly in the BIOS when CPU is idle, without any load. That way you’ll know the baseline temperature.

Also, did you set any custom fan curve for the CPU cooler in the BIOS?

Not any curve for it, and the fan is the same I’ve been using over a year and is the first time happening this in my computer. Is weird but I think is time to get a different cpu fan lol. Will check the idle temp when I get home

Setting up the fan curve should be the first thing you do after entering the BIOS. It’s essential to prevent the CPU from overheating.

The stock cooler is kinda basic. It works but might be too weak while gaming. Better get a better cooler for quieter and cooler running or AIO.
