Performance Loss with SU14

Had installed SU14 and had good fps. But after the newest additional and optional windows 11 update; my fps went from around 120 to 60-40 fps :open_mouth: . When reverting the update to the older one, fps was good again. Beware of the optional win11 update!

I have TPM and even virtualization disabled from BIOS since years… in my case it’s not that.

What was the update called? KB-number? Date?

The optional win11 update I installed was the KB5033375 from 12/12-2023.

I am afraid I get the same result…no matter settings in MSFS or Windows. Something is sending a CPU command that just dogs the CPU to its knees…I have a 5.4 Ghz in stock OC and 4.8 non OC mode…

Just to be clear, this does not happen in Starfield, Alan Wake 2 or in Xplane 12…something is triggering stuff in MSFS…on my system

Rest assured, so it does on mine… A system that cost me roughly 6k…

One of the comforts of life is that there is always somebody who has it worse than one self…my system cost 3k…in other words, you are my comfort mate

Conversely, there’s always someone who has it better than one self too. Some Xbox X owners are siming on a sub Ā£500 system. In other words you are their comfort. Well maybe

Only having a bit of fun here by the way. That said, and being serious here, I do find it strange that even people with very high specced systems seem to be having performance issues whilst some of those with older lower specced systems are reasonably content or so it seems. Perhaps expectations play a part here, maybe, I don’t know.

SU14 is disastrous for me. I fly exclusively VR with quest 3, i9 12900, 3080ti. Mostly GA low and slow. With SU13 I had a solid 80 FPS (with Oculus ASW) . I have had to reduce TLOD,OLED, target frames to 72. DLSS instead of TAA ( with the effect on glass avionics) and still cannot run Voice attack and NLR motion platform as they cause stutters at about 2Hz, presumably caused by Simconnect.
It’s now flyable with vanilla default aircraft but any more complex, such as A2A Comanche cause stutters as do many payware airports.

So, I can still fly but unable to do the things that SU13 allowed.

I really hope that Asobo are investigating and looking for a solution in the short term.

Perhaps, as I mentioned previously, I had a good experience on a very modest setup and expected to get a similar experience with ultra settings on my new PC. That said, my expectations have been occasionally met which is the source of my frustration. I posted this in another thread, but it might be better here and I’ll delete that one:

Today’s saga…

Early this morning, I flew the JF Hawk from RAF Valley, around the Mach loop and back. It was perfect - good FPS, silky smooth and no stutters - no matter if I flew high or a few feet off the ground at 400kts. Weather was set to high level clouds, multiplayer on, all other traffic off.

I repeated the flight with the JF Vulcan with the exact same settings and other than a slight FPS drop, which is to be expected, everything was the same.

I was extremely happy with this, so I tested the Hawk over London, following the Thames. I have OrbX London Landmarks installed and some outlying airfields. Again, excepting a slight drop in FPS, 300kts at low level was superb.

The only thing that had changed from previous problematic flights was the weather, I usually use live weather unless it’s extremely windy.

Fast-forward to this afternoon and with not a single thing changing on my side, I repeated the flight over London and it was back to normal, with FPS dropping to low 20s and frequent stutters etc. I tried multiple attempts to see what was causing this, including disabling all online services, removing OrbX from the community folder etc. but it was just as bad.

How on earth can I have such different experiences on the same day, albeit separated by a few hours, using all the same parameters? I really don’t know if this is SU14, the servers or what. I checked my internet connection and it was fine at 270Mbps, so not my end.

I think personally that on some PC systems SU14 has almost definitely had a performance impact. As to why, I haven’t got a clue to be honest. I think it’s something that’s tanking the cpu but who knows?

But even before SU14, let’s say SU13 just as an example, I have experienced performance differences with the same sim settings and the same weather. This has been a thing over the last 3 1/2 years. The only ā€˜culprit’ I am able to come up with is the Msoft servers. I could be wrong of course but I genuinely now can’t think what else it can be. We have seen the effect on downloads during updates so maybe there could be a similar downside at peak times or maintenance periods ???

Good points. I have had similar experiences of fluctuating performance on the same day over the last couple of years, but never so bad where I just give up the flight.

Same experience here… First days after the update lots of stuttering and flights ending with freezing. All of a sudden everything was smooth again, yesterday I did a flight from JFK to AMS; no problems at all. In the past same thing; most performance problems and CTD’s disappeared after a while without changing anything on my side.

Had a similar experience. More stutters than SU13 for a couple days after SU14, then yesterday suddenly silky smoothness. CPU spikes to 100% across multiple cores also disappeared. I usually don’t agree with people who say server-side issues cause performance problems, but this time it really looks that way.

I think this might also related to the server performance. e.g. server network or CPU bottleneck.

It happened to me even before SU14. One day I got stutters and the next day I got silky smooth experience when flying at the same location and using the same airplane.

Somehow, the server guy hit a refresh or restart button, and the server bottleneck is gone.

SU14 has definitely caused a performance loss on my X Box X. The sim just seems to struggle to even try to deliver what it used to with ease. Mainly its the photogrammetry just will not load hardly at all. There are flat patches and crumpled buildings/houses everywhere. There seem to be a fair amount of trees – its the buildings and all non tree stuff thats flat and/or distorted. I’ve tried many areas now and all of them were great before SU14 but now most of them are bad. I did notice that the East USA server seems to be missing again so maybe thats it.

I was flying over Chicago and I tried resetting Online functionality by turning it off, applying, then turning it back on and when I was back in the C172G1000 cockpit, all the screens went momentarily blank and the AP mode had switched back to ROL… I guess thats normal?? Didnt do a thing to improve the PG though.

My thought is that this may have to do with the recent changes to alleviate the ā€˜Tile popping’ issue or maybe the weather synchronization changes… or it may be neither. It does seem to me that it appeared in the very last two updates to the beta because I didnt have PG issues with early beta versions.

Photogrammetry seems to be the main issue for me with SU14.

I have been flying in the Caribbean region for two days with no performance issues.

Today I flew out of Boston and it was a stuttering mess.

they really need to fix this ive lost half my fps and my sim looks no different. Its stupid that these updates are mandatory when half the time it messes up peoples sims and theres nothing they can do about it than wait on developers to first of all see it, and then to actually do something about it. Its not up to us to fix MSFS unreliable updates. They shouldnt release something that clearly loses performance cos that will impact many

Asobo/MSFS team, when the fix will be done?.. its urgent because we can not enjoy the sim as before due to performance issues.

Would be great to have a concrete answer. Time is passing and silence from your side reigns in this topic

That’s exactly the question I have asked on su14 update poll. You are not alone.
