Have a coworker who’s looking to build a rig for flight sims and getting their kids into it.
I’m not sure how old his kids are or if they have any prior flight sim experience, but I’m thinking couch co-op MSFS on an Xbox would be a pretty solid starting point.
Given that, I’m wondering how well the Series S handles it on a basic TV, as a low cost entry point?
Don’t know yet. I’m thinking 1080p, and if it’s 4K it probably has to be a Series X. I expect it also depends on TV size; a 1080 would still look ok on a small 4K, that wouldn’t cut it on a larger screen.
My father plays on a 65" 4k screen and a Series S. There are no visual issues with his setup, everything works as expected and the image quality is good. The Series S renders at up to 1440P and upscales the output to 4K if you are plugged into a 4K screen. Never going to be as good as rendered at 4K but it is not bad at all.
Directly from the XBOX support site “Games on Xbox One S also get upscaled to 4K.”
While the Series S is a great value machine, and punches well above its weight, it’s a lot more limited on memory (which on the XBox is shared between CPU and GPU), and can quickly run into issues if you throw big custom airports with lots of traffic at it.
The safer (and imo better) bet would be the Series X.
If your co-worker’s kids only intend to use the base sim I’d say the S is fine. But with third-party content, you’re going to need the additional power of the X.
X-Box Boombox. Useless system. That goes for the X Model too. Yeah, yeah… “One pilot, one world, one sim” or… whatever… No excuses. NOT the same as PC and you won’t convince me otherwise.
Absolutely ridiculous comment that doesn’t help the OP whatsoever. Guessing you’ve got a fair few flight hours on Xbox, then, in order to draw such a hyperbolic conclusion?
Why would I try to convince you otherwise? You do you, and I’ll do me.
Nobody is trying to convince you, they were giving advise to someone who asked if a Series S on a TV was a good solution for their coworker’s kids. You’re also being pretty rude here.
There’s no way I’d go s over x, it’s the cheapest upgrade for MSFS there is. And it doesn’t get any simpler, 3 minutes to set up or disappear and you can sit right up to the TV with incredible clarity.
As I said, for running the vanilla sim, S is fine. It will depend on whether or not the user ultimately plans to use third-party add-ons. Buying an S only to find you shoulda gone X will be a costly mistake; as will buying X when S would have sufficed.
I use series x. Set up on a 4k tv it runs like a dream. I highly recommend it over a series s due to the s smaller RAM. Of course the console version is limited to content and options such as no freeware or VR capabilities but it certainly punches above its weight for the initial cost. It will be fine for flying stock aircraft and most of the higher detail 3rd party add ons. But my word of warning is if you buy lots of environmental addons such as airports and traffic mods then the performance can start to suffer with stuttering and fps loss. All in all its a great way to get the family involved in the sim community without breaking the bank.
