Is there a way to get a performance overlay in the game that’s not part of the OpenXR Toolkit? I’d like to see my GPU usage and temps, along with CPU usage and temps, and maybe a framerate. I just want to see how my system is doing overall from time to time while using VR.
Not that I’m aware of. I just lift up my headset during a quiet moment in flight and look at Windows task manager performance tab or Argus Monitor software to see CPU and GPU loads and temps. I have these set up before I go into VR so it is only a quick ALT TAB to see them on the desktop. Frame rate you can show in headset with the OpenXR Toolkit.
I HIGHLY recommend fpsVR as well! However, not everyone plays MSFS on the Steam Version and unfortunately, fpsVR works only through SteamVR.
For non-SteamVR users you can use the FPS indicator through the games Developer Mode or use the FPS Indicator on Mbucchias NIS Scaler Tool and if you’re using VR and you’re not using that Tool then that would be the very next thing to do on my list would be.
Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, I’m running the MS store version. I think the solution of alt+tabbing to see the stats is probably going to be our best bet until MSI Afterburner adds some kind of VR overlay.
I’ve given up trying to have an in-game display mainly because I don’t think the framerate measurements mean much to our VR experience. I get smooth flights when framerates are 30 fps as well as 40 fps. So that value isn’t really helping me determine my best settings.
What I found is that I need to watch the 1% lows. That’s more indicative of my “smoothness” experience in the sim. As such, I use CapFrameX to capture the measurements and then it will show me not only the average framerate over the capture time but also the 1% and 0.1% lows. These are showing the stuttering. Then when I make settings adjustments I focus on getting those low measurements as high as possible.
Using that approach, I find that limiting my framerate (I limit to 35 fps) gives me the biggest boost to the low measurements and I get really smooth flights.
I recently got this… its very good !
MS store and Steam versions of the sim are unrelated to the software used by different headsets. Some (like Reverb G2) work better with Windows Mixed Reality OpenXR, some (like Valve Index) require SteamVR.
