Physical Version of Flight Simulator Is it worth it?

Looking to buy the Physical " Microsoft Flight Simulator - Premium Deluxe" from aerosoft. I realize i will be paying for it to sit on my shelf as i don’t want to messing around with Discs. (first world problem :grinning:)

What i want to know is, are the other item supplied in the package (books etc) any good ? What exactly do you get for your €109 ?

Thanks in advance

I would love the Disc version for my office shelf, however, it isn’t sold locally.

What I can warn you, however, is that you need to have Disc 1 inserted to play.

I bought it and was never able to install, because I only have an USB connected DVD player (which Win10 never found).
So I ended up buying a second time from MS store :unamused:

The box contains many disks and a printed manual. Nice if you are a collector, else rather useless.

I would advise against it unless you really really want it on your shelf.

After installing from the discs, you’ll have to basically download the whole sim again due to updates, since the disc version is still the same as release.
Also requires the disc to be in your drive.

I think if I really wanted it on my shelf I’d get an empty DVD case, print off some cover inserts from available artwork, then burn off a backup copy of my current install on to DVD-R’s. I checked my current install base, and that would be 38 disks. Perhaps not, then.

I’m with the others - physical media is outdated and needing updates by the time it’s printed. Unfortunately a side effect of programs in early release and rapid development.

And if it needs a disc in a drive to validate ownership, that’s an absolute dealbreaker for me. Every time it wants to check you have a disc, it will need to spin up the drive and read some part of the disc. Extra fun if your drive is noisy or vibrates.

Edit - no idea if it actually needs to verify a disc, though. Seen both that it does and doesn’t.

Not true for me
I had bought the dvd version and it never asked me to insert disc one

Unless you are into collecting these sorts of things to sit on a shelf I would totally avoid physical discs. Just a hassle to deal with. They scratch easy, new PCs come without disc drives and that means if yours is one of these you’ll have to install one or get an external one (slow).

You then realize that what you bought is the sim at launch and have to download huge updates from the internet anyway.

Furthermore digital copies of games are just so easy to handle and “follow” you everywhere. Play on gaming PC, go travelling , continue where you left off on the laptop.

If you got the cash to splash and want to get it twice (one physical one digital) then go for it.

Even as a collector version, it wont be worth much 40 or 50 years from now becasue there will be several million copies laying around gathering dust. Like my “original” disk copy of Bruce Artwick’s FS1 Flight Sim for the Radio Shack Model II or IV. I bought it, I have it and have a functional TRS80 Model IV, however, neither of them are actually worth much in $$$. It is just nice for me to have. My kids could care less, it is too old. Smile…

Good to know. I want this physical version, because it looks cool with all those manuals, even if I install the game digitally, just fun to have a collectible.

Hmmm… interesting okay.

IIRC the Areosoft website had a warning that the disc one was required during startup for DRM purposes. Lots of people around launch who hadn’t read that warning got caught out, many without DVD burners, and so we had posted on the forums about it on a regular basis.

I always thought a DVD check was silly in this day and age, so IF they have removed that requirement, that’s good to know.

Note: The Areosoft Helpdesk still states that Disc 1 is required

Q) Do I need to keep the disc inserted to run Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A) Yes. Disc 1 will need to be inserted to launch Microsoft Flight Simulator to check the status of your activation.
