Picked Up My New Plane Today!

Got the first few flights in the Baron under the belt!

I got my air manager panels built and Alpha / Bravo mappings completed. Took it for a test run from KOPF up to KTLH, procedural wise very similar to the Bonanza so was only a few more things to get familiar with. The G1000 obviously remained the same.

I noticed that it can get away from you very quickly on the ground while taxing if you aren’t careful and the landing / taxi lights are less than ideal (I have been using UWA’s lighting mod on non DLC planes which makes a big difference).

Also noticed when completing loading that there is only spots to fill out for 2 passengers in the rear versus the 4 it sits. Not a big deal can just double up on the weights.

Lastly, quite a few inop switches that I would have expected to work on a DLC plane (prop sync, etc…).

Not show stoppers by any means but hopefully something that gets looked at in the future.

I almost made one fatal mistake during my fuel planning and that was not remembering (until the last minute) that I needed to double my calculations as I am now running twin engine. Was so automatic to just run with the initial number I arrived at out of force of habit but I caught it in time.

The flight itself went smoothly, plane has great climbing performance and handles nicely. The approach was interesting. Issues with Pilot2ATC along with bugs in the new version of the G1000 while learning the new speeds etc of the Baron all came to a head.

Got everything sorted out, then was greeted with landing lights coming at me as I was coming down past 500 and had to go around, got re-vectored and came back in and touched down nicely on the next attempt.

Oh yea, this was all at night as well, because that’s a good time to learn a new plane

All in all it was a success!

Today I left KTLH for our winter home in KEYW and tucked it into the hangar. We have 58 flying hours together and after our charters are done I’ll fly it back to CYTS as it’s warming up back home. By that time I’ll be ready to jump into the Kodiak 100, just in time to start doing cargo rungs up the James bay coast!
