Pimax Crystal Dynamic Foveated Rendering available to selected users

thanks - overall experience (despite the gain in fps) does not feel as smooth (also seems to have introduced some blurriness) - so will do some more testing before deciding what to use…

I can’t get DFR to work in MSFS with my Crystal, OpenXR and PimaxXR.

If I activate DFR in the OpenXR overlay, the 3D rendered world just turns black - only the UI is shown. In all other Games DFR works perfectly, DCS or UEVR…

I have followed Tally mouses Tutorial to set DFR up but it didn’t work. However, it seems that DFR actually works on the UI because I can see the low resolution ring following my gaze but again, the 3D world stays black.

Did anyone experience the same issue?

Did you follow the steps in my post above?

BTW: I prefer FFR over DFR as in DFR I can perceive shimmer at the edges of the resolution rings which follow my gaze. Theoretically DFR allows more agressive setting for FR, but for me the FPS boost from these setings is below +4% (max +2 FPS) so I stick with FFR. But I still use Eye Tracking for the Almalence digital lens plugin (works with DX11 only in MSFS with PimaxXR).

DCS with QuadViews benefits a lot, lot more than MSFS from DFR.

Thanks for getting back to me!

Yes that’s exactly the steps I did.
As soon as I activate any kind of foveated rendering in the OpenXR overlay, I get that black screen. Doesn’t matter if fixed or dynamic.

What I noticed is, that if I look down by tilting my head, the 3D render starts to appear but only flickering.

I’m really confused about this and have no idea what to do because I can’t seem to find anyone who had the same issue.

I tried to use fixed foveated rendering with my Pico4 and virtual Desktop with the same result, so I guess it’s not a Pimax issue…

Did you try to reset OXRT settings or to run it in safe mode?

I did reset the settings but didn’t run it safe mode, I’ll try that.

Did you turn foveated Rendering in the Pimax Settings tool, too? (I tried turning it off and on, no difference, just wondering)

DFR setting in Pimax Play affects only Steam, not PimaxXR.
Consider also temporarily emptying your MSFS Community folder.
And running ordinary flight, not a mission (with objectives etc.).

Thanks for your input, I’ll try that. Last resort would be a clean install, maybe some old Meta Quest or Pico drivers are messing around with MSFS…

The benefits of FR is MSFS are not so big (maybe +10% FPS, similar result you can achieve with small resolution decrease in OXRT). Consider is such benefit is worth the troubleshooting efforts.

I’m trying to squeeze out everything of my 3080ti I can, so I go that extra mile

Let’s hope we get proper DFR or Quad Views Support in the upcoming MSFS…

However I may get a 4080 super, but not sure if it’s that big of a leap…

Black screen when FR is enabled is usually caused by one of these two

  • you completely disabled Anti-Aliasing in MSFS VR settings

  • you disabled “post processing” in MSFS UserCfg.opt

Try looking at these 2 things.

Thank you very much, the issue was that I have turned off MSAA!

It wasn’t clear to me that FR requires AA, seems I didn’t read the informations good enough.

Thanks for you 3 for helping me out, wish you a great day!

Hello, I’m using 8kx because I want to prioritize viewing angle.
Which NVIDIA driver version is stable for PimaxCrystal?
I’m still using 531.29, but I’m starting to feel like it’s too old because the shader cache location is the same folder as the RTX3000 series.

We are using the last version of PITOOL for stability.

PIMAXXR Control Center uses 0.3.4. (Because it was not possible to migrate to VR with CTRL+TAB in 0.4)

The PCs are 4090 and 7950x3D, with 64GB of memory, and 20GB of the memory is converted into a RAM disk and used for rolling cache. (No conclusion has been reached regarding the pros and cons of using rolling cache.)
In addition, the 7950x3D disables hyperthreading and operates with 16 cores and 16 threads.

We use DLSS.
Artifacts and cloud head tracking fluctuations are noticeable even in FFR, so FFR in OPENXRTOOLKIT is excluded.
I use PITOOL’s FFR for balance, but honestly I don’t feel any effect or change. (Maybe not applied)
COMPULSIVESMOOTH is set to closed.

This means you are probably using the ancient version of Pitool 277. This version is 2 years old. You need to update to Pimax Play

thank you.
I had used PimaxPLAY before, but I got rid of it because it was unstable and I feared it would be a disadvantage in terms of load.
I do feel that if it stays old, there may be problems.
That’s troubling.

By the way, what version of NVIDIA are you using?

When it comes to our minor hardware, I feel like the latest updates always have terrible results half the time.
I always feel cautious when it comes to updates.

I’m on Crystal and I always upgrade to the most current Nvidia drivers. No problems.

thank you.
I’ll try it next time.
I recently tried making the shader cache infinite, but it seems to have some effect on the sky above Tokyo.
However, under harsh conditions, I still experience noise and FPS drops.
It’s especially bad when I fly over skyscrapers with a MOD that uses PLATEAU, which is a 3D model of Tokyo as part of Japan’s national project.
I found out yesterday that when this phenomenon occurs, the TCTL of 7950x3D exceeds 80 degrees Celsius.
I feel that the CPU may be the bottleneck.
(I am recording a video like this. Due to the fate of VR, I can only record the left eye part.)
