I completely agree, this issue has nothing to do with whether you’re running the latest drivers or not. Indeed in my case it doesn’t seem related even to how powerful your CGU is. After trying all the usual ‘solutions’ I decided to replace the GPU, from an RX5700XT to an eye-wateringly expensive 3080Ti. And the result? No difference whatsoever. None. Clouds still highly pixelated with jagged edges and often looking less like clouds and more like pummice stones floating in the air.
Sorry, but I don’t see anything grainy there. Grainy clouds look different. But feel free to mark the spot where you see the grainy clouds.
I think the whole discussion about it is completely silly anyway. It is only because of this back and forth that we are where we are now. A weather chaos.
Hi Alex,
I am looking at the picture on a 34" widescreen monitor, what I see is the Aircraft and it’s absolutely perfect ( unless it’s got a white body) you cannot complain about that, but there seems to be a " Layer " that covers the rest of the picture containing any clouds, if I go above the Aircraft and look at the ground it is razor-sharp.
The picture above is not a good example of the grain, it can be a whole lot worse to look at.
But you have to admit there are a lot of unhappy Simmers who vehemently believe it has changed and for the worse, or we wouldn’t be reading a 500 and counting long post.
Sure…but there is no grain in those clouds. Grain does exist as can easily be seen in the pic a few posts up.(Legendsy7041)
The thing is, the new sim seems to do everything with pixels and lines so to some degree, we may have to just accept it. like in that pic - I see no grain and no problem really - just a boring cloud.(and the sim does need boring clouds as well as all others)
Is all this is down to the world of anti-aliasing algorithms which is quite difficult to understand, or use, and is there any preferred settings we can use that work best in the Sim?
When you look at in-game settings there are many changes you can make, plus, if you look at " Manage 3D settings " in the Nvidia App there are another dozen settings to choose from. Could it be that folk are using different graphics settings? I have always had the clouds on Ultra and never tried anything else.
I would describe this more as blocky than grainy.
But yes, I do see this. It’s back. It was once fixed but it’s back now.
Radeon 6800XT MBE, latest Windows 11 drivers.
To reduce the grain effect I have been trying various Density settings.
On my monitor, the clouds look better at 0.70 %, much less grain but it also comes with less " structure " in the cloud but that could be because less Density means more light coming through.
When you start looking into this, you start to notice the surface of your monitor and the matte screen or anti-glare coating becomes visible especially on the white/grey as you change the settings.
What I cannot understand is, I set cloud layers, cloud type, etc , all during the flight planning stage and when the Sim starts, none of the weather settings matches what I have entered it just seems to do what it likes and it’s not set on " Live " weather?
Can’t set density with live weather
Adjustments made there don’t seem to be working at the moment. Your best bet imo is to choose a Preset like Clear Sky and then enter the sim and bring up the weather adjustment screen from the toolbar. Make adjustments and save it as your own theme. Then, on the next flight, you can choose ‘Custom’ at the flight planning stage and choose your theme. Note that it still may not load correctly (density often defaults to 1.0 if your theme has something higher).
Also - not sure if it matters but if you want to use presets then turning ‘Live Weather’ OFF in the data section of General Options is a good idea.
Thankyou mbraortns,
That sounds good, will give it a go tonight.
cheers
can u show us a pic? me and all my simmer friends have this artifact on clouds since console relase.
Pretty sure this is caused by the motion blur filter and is out of Asobo’s hands… And if not it’s probably that your gpu is struggling to render properly so you should reconsider your settings (esp. low latency mode).
47fps.
It happens to me as well sometimes. There is an issue with how clouds are rendered when they’re on top of each others.

DEV Mode = OFF
The cloud formations are so ugly! They appear heavily pixelated to the point where I would take FSX clouds over these. I have clouds set to ultra and have a high end system. Is there another setting that effects the clouds? Suggestions?

Exactly. Seems to have gotten a lot worse since 7. Did they decrease the resolution in order to attempt to fix frame rates?
Which folder is that in?
And they didn’t fixed nothing because the frame still worst but now with the clouds looks like Santa beard
