I wouldn’t even mind if only the player can see the avatar and other players only see a generic avatar. but it would be a bonus. Would also add more fun if it should later be possible to be a co-pilot or passanger in a plane of another player.

I have brought that other topic into Wishlist, but not merged with this. This topic appears to be about making an avatar that you can make look like yourself, whereas the other one is about having a body in the left seat. Either way, even if we merged it into this topic, the votes would not merge. The forum software lacks the ability to merge votes.
I didn’t catch this specific “customized” avatar difference.
Although one depends on the other (i.e. the capability to displaying other 3D people in the cockpit and/or the cabin), it is indeed different then.
At least if the simulator could support displaying other 3D people, customizing their textures would be the 2nd step to getting to what this topic is about then.

I therefore believe anyone wanting 3D people in the aircraft/cabin should vote for both topics then.
Even in the old MS ‘A Century of Flight’ release it was possible to paste a low res but eminently
recognisable ‘selfie’ over the default pilots face.
So yes, it would be nice to have a similar option built in to the avatar selection page in MSFS 2020.
But hey, lets prioritise fixing all the bugs and performance issues first, eh!

Add an avatar editor including the ability to add a face from a photo and / or clipboard and mapping the face to the avatar base model. This would allow to put our own faces on the pilot / co-pilot. Sure would look cool!

This would be very easy to implement by Asobo since the avatars are already in external view lod01 and would have to incorporate them internal view in lod00 . This helps in VR because we see as if we have our legs and we are not a spirit in the cabin.

With face-generation technology being widely available via simple phone apps, wouldn’t it be great to upload a few of your pictures into the SIM Pilot Avatar Creator and let it generate your face for the actual pilot in a plane?
That level of customization will add a different level of loyalty for the players and will set MSFS totally apart from the competition.

Give the ability to import own set of photos to use as the pilot icon during flight. Perhaps use straight ahead. Left and right 45 degrees, and left and right 90 degrees. Would be neat!
I was thinking about this for quite a while now. Very good idea. There are other apps where you can construct your own avatar with endless possibilities. Why is it not yet possible in MSFS 2020?

Specifically, more older pilot hair styles, stages of balding. A lot of us pilots are not hip young bucks you know! 
Heh. Yep. Either that or I’m going to have to shave the rest of my head to match my avatar.
Echo that! - Character creation is very limited with body types, hair styles and skin complexions!
I would love if I could have my hairstyle with the color too (purple).
I would just be happy with something other than Pacific islanders for an avatar.
