My biggest complaint about MSFS is the shape of trees. They look OK from ground level, but can be a big eye sore looking down from the sky. The tree canopy is too rounded like mushrooms, or broccolis, just not real trees. It can be worse, as they often gave my goose bumps, thinking about diseased skin.
As a reference, I attach the modded trees from Rex Accuseason for comparison. The modded trees are a bit monotonous, but they look normal, healthy, and real. I wish Asobo can pay more attention to trees, as they are so important for the look of the sim, and our life! At least you can make them less rounded all over the world. And then maybe more varieties, and more realistic looking.
I’m pretty sure the tree shape has changed since the initial release of the sim. I think the original trees might have looked better in some cases.
Nowadays Flight simulation is no longer just the realistic simulation of a certain plane, but also the world around it. I believe this is a tendency of flight simulation, and other simulations as well, and MSFS is exactly on that road. It’s the creation of a world which is not restricted to just a vehicle.
My first flight sim is FS4, which didn’t even have any trees. Maybe there were some, if we could call the sporadic straight lines “trees”. Yet I still remember my excitement, which was even stronger than my feeling towards MSFS 2020. What I mean is the world is changing. Our desire for realism, aesthetics and immersion is growing. What’s acceptable in the past is no longer so now.
There is also the Wooden Bucket Theory. The capacity of a bucket is determined by the shortest stave. A beautiful modern sim can be more easily hurt by an element that may not be noticed in the past at all.
It seems the trees may differ depending on where in the world I am flying. Also, development on seasons has been started, which is really going to be interesting.
