This may not strictly be true. A lot of airliners SOP’s mandate the ND should be displayed on it.
As you can see here in the shot. You can change it from Norm (Acts as you describe) to primary and ND, this
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but for example Ryanair almost always use it to display ND. But I would agree with leaving in norm or off.
