PMDG 737 - Should I use Honeywell or Collins MCP

I hate it when I have too many options to choose from. Should I just use whatever the livery I am using is coming with (mostly I fly the United new livery with the scimitar winglets, and that uses Honeywell). Or do you guys have a preference. I understand that the only difference besides visuals is that the Collins is that on the Honeywell the autopilot disengages on touch down and you have to use the rudder to hold the plane on the centerline, whereas with the Collins the Autopilot will use the rudder to keep the plane centered on the runway…

In terms on immersion and realism…which one should I use…?

That’s not correct about the rudder.

In as far as the NG had/has a rudder channel (which I’m pretty sure the vast majority don’t) you will only get rollout guidance when having done an autoland. For that both autopilots need to be engaged, and the autopilot(s) must be disconnected once at a safe taxi speed.

With either MCP option on the PMDG and a single channel approach (which must lead to a manual landing) you will have no rudder input at all after landing.

ok…that is what I meant. But only the collins can do the rudder in autolanding, correct?

That I don’t know. If the Collins includes a rudder channel for the Autopilot then yes, it will.

You’d need to defer to someone who’s rated on the aircraft for that one :slightly_smiling_face: I know the classics and early NGs definitely didn’t have a rudder channel.

Technically there are many MANY changes. In terms of immersion and realism it depends on the age of the airframe that United put in your hands ! But it’s really your choice. Chris Brady’s wonderful BOEING 737 TECHNICAL SITE and his videos provide a world of information about this if you have the time to study it. Do you want Autoland CAT III, etc ? Then go for Collins.
According to the site:

Of course it also depends on how well PMDG has simulated this.

Personally i use the one i think looks nicest, which for me is the one with the orange letters, looks a bit more retro :stuck_out_tongue:
Also fits well with analogue standby instruments.
