PMDG Douglas DC-6

@BostonJeremy77 You already know way more than I do and I’m sure you’re visiting the PMDG forums to research any issues you find, but just to be sure, the GPS not following the localizer issue that you see is not the thing they talk about on page 11 of the Pilot Introduction Manual, with switching to LOC mode on the Gyropilot needing to be followed with “a quick double tap of the CDI key on the GPS – from VLOC to GPS, and back to VLOC – this “wakes up” the Autopilot/GPS signal and gets it to track the localizer” is it?

It’s not PMDG’s bug. It’s Asobo’s, Read the PMDG forum.

Be that as it may, as long as MS is fine giving away msfs for next to nothing on xbox game pass , i have no problem buying direct from a dev even if that cuts MS out of the equation (for the record , i got the premium version of msfs- not because it has compelling content over the standard version-cuz it doesnt-, but because in that purchase i chose to support ms/asobo. I mention this solely to illustrate i have no issues supporting ms as well).

To each their own, i dont begrudge anyone their purchase choices

Hi,
Excitedly went and purchased the DC6 and when I try to install it Bitdefender marks it as having a Trojan “Gen:Variant.Graftor.881454”. I did submit a ticket to PMDG, This is disappointing and Hopefully its a false flag. The PMDG forum also has other users in the past complaining about Trojans in other installers!!!

Anyone else with similar issues/help?

While i complained about the gps - and it is a common refrain from me these days as its getting to be more andmore a pet peeve- i am really happy about this aircraft , regardless of whether i buy it or not. Its a ral departur from a lot.of the low-effort cash grab shovelware wwe’ve seen so much of up to this point , and i hope it shows to others the commercial viability of well crafted, high fidelity systems modelling on complex aircraft . I really hope this is a turning point for the sim ( even if i do primarily fly GA instead of commercial carriers, new or vintage)

I’m really thankful for the AFE. I usually don’t go for that sort of automated help, but “back in the day” this aircraft had three people on the flight deck. There’s a reason for that: there’s a whole bunch to do correctly - times four - in many cases.

This is the aircraft that may, after 20+ years, get me interested in airliners. It’s stunning.

Now… on to study the tutorials. There’s lots to learn…

Just Got a ticket from PMDG saying its “False Positive”.

No, that’s not the same thing. This is related to cold and dark starts. Something about the way they are done right now doesn’t initialize the signal traveling properly between the GNS unit and the aircraft and the current workaround until that’s fixed is to cycle the GPS option to no GPS and back to GPS (on the tablet during the startup procedure)…

Flying another one - St Petersburg to Moscow. This is a blast. This time I am adventurous enough to fly at FL210, which required supercharger management when you start running out of manifold pressure during climb and I also did the proper fuel system management routine - climb to cruise on main tanks, then switch to auxiliary and wait to burn off that fuel before switching back to mains… Did it all proper! (Cookie for me) So, just remember - losing tank pumps to high, gaining tanks pump to low… one engine at a time! This is really fun.

Also, the ■■■■ ATC gets in the way - climb to FL210, descend to 9,000, climb back to FL210… radial engines take forever to properly climb and descend, so I think on a lot of DC-6 flights we have to ignore the default ATC’s stuff. They also anticipate descent at a WAY higher rate than the proper 500 ft/min… you basically can’t count on them to clear you for descent on time. You have to figure out your TOD manually and just do it.

Also, I can’t wait for the logbook popup to go the F away. On the DC-6 it pops up during startup procedure. THAT means when you hit continue the AI copilot will no longer handle communications automatically, since it thinks your flight is over. Oh yeah, and your taxi ribbon probably won’t work most of the time because of that popup box. So annoying. I really hope Asobo takes that thing away next month.

How to say this politely… Because folks like him/her love to find some issues, complain a lot and for sure aren’t even interested in flying a classic.
If everyone would inform him/herself before buying… but even that is asked too much.
No refund mixMugz :blue_heart:… go and play tetris… :zipper_mouth_face:

For sure they are not sending you a virus… false positive. :blue_heart:

Edit: Maybe they do indeed inject a trojan into your system to control if you’re flying their beauty with skills… if not they will take it from you. So be careful! :yum:

I had the same issue. I reloaded the plane in my case and all worked out.

I agree with your assessment, and as I already wrote I’m fine with the radios that are supplied.

It also serves to highlight that ‘study level’ does not necessarily mean 100% accurate simulation.
This, like the remark about the radios, is a strictly personal consideration: I am satisfied with the DC-6 and I’m certainly not looking to start a pointless debate about the radios or any other aspect of the product.

Folks, I think this post from Rob needs to be read, so I am re-posting it here.

Captains,

This post is to keep you apprised of a few items that we have swept up in post-release that will be shipped to you as a micro update in the days ahead:

  1. If starting from a cold/dark configuration with a GTN430 equipped airplane, the VOR course needles may be unresponsive even when placed in VLOC mode. This was found to be an unexpected setting in the sim platform and has been fixed for future update.

  2. Gap found in the cabin ceiling. Fixed for update.

  3. Drone collision box misaligned. Fixed for update.

  4. Installer is setting the PMDG Operations Center to launch upon user log-in to Windows. Corrected and placed in distribution. IMPORTANT NOTES BELOW.

  5. If user attempts to update PMDG DC-6 MSFS via Operations Center (since there is no update) OC hangs. (don’t do this!) Correction in testing.

  6. OC2 does not install liveries when the sim is installed under specific directory. Affects only some MS Store version owners.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I misconfigured a menu setting when building the release installer, and this setting causes the PMDG Operations Center to launch on every subsequent log-in by the user. This was done unintentionally and does require that the user follow these steps in order to stop this behavior:

->Press the windows START button, then select SETTINGS>APPS>STARTUP. Scroll down until you see PMDG Operations Center and select the startup setting to OFF

**Please accept my apology for this. It is grossly aggressive to force an app to start each time you log in and it was very much unintentional. We have replaced the installer causing this problem, but unfortunately the Operations Center is flagged as “do not uninstall” since it is shared by multiple products, so simply uninstalling and reinstalling will not work. Flipping that setting will stop it from misbehaving.

We have a number of other items we are working on and we’ll update this list here as we implement fixes. We will push an update to you via the Operations Center once we are ready to do so, and we will advise you both here and via the Operations Center when it is available.

I would add that they are also recommending NOT to use FSUIPC becuase it is causing issues.

and the link

Just couldn’t resist getting the plane (and I have absolutely no use for airliners!!!), what a beauty. This sets the standard for mods to a very very high standard (as expected).

To be honest the modelling, depth of systems, complexity etc were all to be expected after everything that has been said about PMDG (that’s what you get for being one of the top dogs, what would be extraordinary for everybody else is considered “expected” for you)

BUT! The real gamechanger and what to me sets the bar for every single complex aircraft going forward is the AFE!!
This allows every level of pilot to enjoy the plane and be able to use it, and learn while going along! No dumbing down, no “sorry you can’t fly before you get your type rating and memorize and understand the 5000 page handbook”, just go in and fly and learn at your own pace!

This is HUGE!

Jorg hinted at something like this coming for MSFS default also which would be great

The DC6 is a brilliant showcase for what MSFS can do, I’ve enjoyed it a lot so far

Hi Gordon
Having just watched tutorials 1 to 3, my finger is hovering over the “purchase” button, even though I did not think I’d be interested in flying her.
FSUIPC is not essential for me, as have no controls bound through it, but I use it for other addons (eg PACX). Do I understand from their reply to you (“you can have it along in the sim but not use for our products”) that it is OK to have FSUIPC in running alongside as it has nothing to do with the controller interface with the aircraft?
Not sure if you know the answer yet or have tested, but asking just in case you have a view…
I don’t think it is a deal breaker since, PACX doesn’t necessarily lend itself to DC-6 ‘immersion’, but would be good to know!
Cheers, Simon

I just bought this and have to say its absolutely incredible, and totally worth the price they are asking! Amazing in VR, so atmospheric and it feels amazing to fly. I am reliving ice pilots right now! hahah

I assume that PMDG knew about this since they would have conducted extensive in-house testing.

I wonder if the old trick of switching generic plane models on for MP traffic may work here.

Hi Simon

I;m afarid I don’t have an answer for you. I’m still trying to get my Bravo throttle set up and havign a couple of issues that MAY be FSUIPC related. I’m actually on the point of uninstalling FSUIPC to see if that is what is causing the issue - FSUPIC seems to start automatically with the sim and I can’t fin anyway of stopping it, and wonder if, even if I have no controls bound, that is somehow corrupting things.

If you are using FSUIPC without the paid controller add on bit, then it may well be fine. I don’t know enough about how all this works though!

Sorry I can’t be of more help!

Gordon

This is almost a steal. But if you think about it this should also lead to a lot of people - who would have otherwise avoided PMDG altogether - buy the DC-6, love it, get used to it and later on buying Boeing 737 and other pricier PMDG addons too.

So they have set aside short term gains for long term one, highly commendable.
