Think there is a lot of eye of the beholder and personal preference in MSFS certainly. One man’s trash is another’s treasure for sure!
I never had any perf issues with 2020 myself on pc, and use Dlss dlaa in 2020 while in 2024 I need to use Dlss quality to get the same performance / fps, but again is a heavier graphics engine so is expected I suppose.
But in fairness thought I would try another direct compare with fresh eyes. Used the Xbox as was topic of comments I was replying to above and flew around LRBC airport (picked at random) using few clouds preset at 6am in 2024 then 2020. At normal lounge distance from tv.
2024 - drone and avatar mode, of course 2024 wins hands down when 100 ft or less. Eg around airports.
Lighting and shadows are very good and a step up from 2020, eg sun through clouds and windshield are very well done.
Ground textures (as is norm for 2024 outside of PG / TIN areas) is.. well let’s be polite and say ‘needs improvement’. The ai slop autogen on fields is IMO such a step down from 2020 and really drags down the realism of the experience. Sure the sim can look good, but you can’t ever escape the “I’m playing a game” mindset.
Clouds seem flat and lacking definition, which I believe was the latest visual downgrade target Asobo went after with su5 so I read. Guess they can’t make ground textures any worse now so they are going after the clouds next?! Sure hope they undo it as one thing that 2024 did well was clouds prior!
2020 - much sharper visuals overall than 2024 is first immediate impression. Once in flight 2020 has much better aerials / ground textures. No autogen or overlays makes such a massive difference to the realism when at 1000- 2000 ft.
The same few clouds default preset at 6am was stunning and clouds have depth vs 2024 being ‘flat’ by comparison.
Overall there is a ‘realness’ to the visuals in 2020 is probably best way to summarise. 2024 while it can be stunning when just right, has a cartoonish feel that can only be appreciated after seeing 2020 in comparison.
Using Xbox allows for a more even comparison as is stock setup and as set my Microsoft. Appreciate that on pc you can try reshade etc to try and improve 2024, but testing here was more aimed at ‘out of the box’ experience. (And all the lipstick on a pig approach with reshade and Rex that I have tried since 2024 release has not yet brought back realism that 2020 did by default and effortlessly for me).
End of the day though, find what makes you happy with either sim and go with it! Unfortunately for the 30% of simmers still choosing 2020 as their primary sim, su16 was such a sucker punch on many visual and quality fronts that finding that happiness again is fleeting.
Meanwhile Asobo continues to “new phone who dis” to any feedback post su16 and as with clouds in su5 of 2024, seem to be devolving the experiences that we had since 2020..
