[Polls] Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Sim Update 5 Feedback (PC/Xbox/PS5)

Well if i could go back to a previous version i would show you examples … but i cant now can i …

Or i should make pictures now so i can check with upcomming releases … but thats a bit weird

I think there are enough examples and subject on matter.

I have fliwn for 3000+ hours in both 2020 and 2024 … believe me i know that the latest update make thing less crisp

So the best we could do is I find somewhere with what I would consider good PG, and then you tell me whether that is acceptable or not. I’m not sure I remember anything during SU5 that specifically changed PG, but I do know a few spots where I thought it looked pretty good. An old one would be Venice, which looks great as you fly over it.

Its not even that … even the regular textures on the countryside .. flying high … way more blurry then before

One would think, after a couple of years, the msfs startup video of the airliner cruising down the runway for takeoff , either the Captain or the First Officer would have their hand on the Throttle. They do seem quite content just hands off and looking out the cockpit windows as the jet roars down the runway. Smile… I know, no biggie…but it is one of the first things we see when starting the sim.

Yes that’s correct. Been complained about since release but 2024 is built on a game engine that is better performance optimised but has a certain GTA style which gives a massive lack of realism of the visuals vs 2020. Also even after they downgraded 2020 with su16 by aligning to the lower res / quality maps used by 2024, the overlays or autogen that 2024 applies over the top of these underlying aerials / maps really does make 2020 seem like the nextgen sim not 2024 when in flight. At this point I think that either Asobo doesn’t care in the slightest or it’s just too hard to change anything now. Honestly between the aligning to the low res aerials used by 2024, and at the same time removing support for the third party solutions that once were able to give much higher resolution aerials, it really does feel as though it’s a targeted effort to reduce the experience which I still can’t fathom why.

All I can say is that with my mid-range PC and graphics card, I gave up on 2020. The work required to get good visuals was just too much hassle. It just sat unused for ages. Since the startup woes of 2024 have been dealt with, I have been using this sim (along with all the beta tests) voraciously and absolutely loving it. Yeah there have been some setbacks in the betas but they were all dealt with and today I fly mostly in VR in both GA and airliners and the graphics are stunning and smooth. 2020 doesn’t even exist on my computer anymore.

Good Point, thank you

Think there is a lot of eye of the beholder and personal preference in MSFS certainly. One man’s trash is another’s treasure for sure!

I never had any perf issues with 2020 myself on pc, and use Dlss dlaa in 2020 while in 2024 I need to use Dlss quality to get the same performance / fps, but again is a heavier graphics engine so is expected I suppose.

But in fairness thought I would try another direct compare with fresh eyes. Used the Xbox as was topic of comments I was replying to above and flew around LRBC airport (picked at random) using few clouds preset at 6am in 2024 then 2020. At normal lounge distance from tv.

2024 - drone and avatar mode, of course 2024 wins hands down when 100 ft or less. Eg around airports.

Lighting and shadows are very good and a step up from 2020, eg sun through clouds and windshield are very well done.

Ground textures (as is norm for 2024 outside of PG / TIN areas) is.. well let’s be polite and say ‘needs improvement’. The ai slop autogen on fields is IMO such a step down from 2020 and really drags down the realism of the experience. Sure the sim can look good, but you can’t ever escape the “I’m playing a game” mindset.

Clouds seem flat and lacking definition, which I believe was the latest visual downgrade target Asobo went after with su5 so I read. Guess they can’t make ground textures any worse now so they are going after the clouds next?! Sure hope they undo it as one thing that 2024 did well was clouds prior!

2020 - much sharper visuals overall than 2024 is first immediate impression. Once in flight 2020 has much better aerials / ground textures. No autogen or overlays makes such a massive difference to the realism when at 1000- 2000 ft.

The same few clouds default preset at 6am was stunning and clouds have depth vs 2024 being ‘flat’ by comparison.

Overall there is a ‘realness’ to the visuals in 2020 is probably best way to summarise. 2024 while it can be stunning when just right, has a cartoonish feel that can only be appreciated after seeing 2020 in comparison.

Using Xbox allows for a more even comparison as is stock setup and as set my Microsoft. Appreciate that on pc you can try reshade etc to try and improve 2024, but testing here was more aimed at ‘out of the box’ experience. (And all the lipstick on a pig approach with reshade and Rex that I have tried since 2024 release has not yet brought back realism that 2020 did by default and effortlessly for me).

End of the day though, find what makes you happy with either sim and go with it! Unfortunately for the 30% of simmers still choosing 2020 as their primary sim, su16 was such a sucker punch on many visual and quality fronts that finding that happiness again is fleeting.

Meanwhile Asobo continues to “new phone who dis” to any feedback post su16 and as with clouds in su5 of 2024, seem to be devolving the experiences that we had since 2020..

Same here, 2020 isn’t on my series x anymore, hasn’t been for 18 months

Hey @USCG19763803, this is likely caused by a glitchy potentiometer (internal component) that provides your rudder axis. Many Logitech joysticks suffer from this at one stage or another. I suspect you’ll get similar results with that axis in other games, not just with MSFS aircraft. I recommend you post in the Hardware and Peripherals forum for more specific advice.

Yep, the New Thrustmaster T16000M FCS Flight Stick and throttle cured it lol. Good thing it was in sealed backup for the last three months. Now the FSreborn E300, SWS hanger and FX hanger are all happy.

Funny you should say that. I have a very similar model that I purchased for that exact reason, only to discover, ironically, that this model is prone to a very similar problem on the rudder (z) axis, where Thrustmaster did NOT use a HALL-effect sensor, but a standard potentiometer. I found this thread that helped with a fix.

I was going to say the same thing. The 16000M is notorious for the twist action failing very quickly. Mine died within a few months of ownership. I never bothered getting it replaced under warranty as I use the rudder pedals that came with the TM flight kit instead.

Yep I took both my sticks to work. Our tech guru traded me. I now have a Emb Yoke and throttles and peddles. He knows I have a love for all Emb. family.

I fly the a330, get flight plan from simbrief, and dont even touch EFB… and I can fly fline.

Flying Career mode medium cargo mission in a PC-24 on PS5 this evening. So far I have had a mission start from the hold point due to an Airport problem at YWDH in Australia. On route now and it is a night mission without any issues so far.

No stutters, no freezes, loaded in no problem - I appear to be lucky and not be experiencing the issues many others are - well so far anyway!

Perfect flight from the sim - no graphical issues! The only issues were the avionics switching MFD and PFD on and off - but this is a longstanding bug in all machines.

It is so strange - same sim, same PS5 - why some and not others. To be fair, I do not use it for any other PS5 games. Is that the reason maybe?

At Mods - please note - PS5 sale of Carenado aircraft

I see the advert for it the same as the PC advert below.

But nothing on the MP has a 30% off sign next to it.
This is the PC version with the sale listed

BUT - This is the PS5 version - no discount listed!

This banner is not there either for exploring the sale

I paid full price :skull: but yes the sale hasn’t reached PS5 players
