Possible to add GPS functionality to the JMB-VL3?

Hello friends,

One of my favorite planes in the game is the JMB VL-3.

It does not have any autopilot by default. However I enabled this by going to the Systems file and enabling the Autopilot there.

It was like this:

[Autopilot]
Autopilot available = 0

I changed it to this:

[Autopilot]
Autopilot available = 1

So now I have autopilot. However only HDG, ALT, VSI work.

GPS does not work. It will not follow the magenta GPS planned route. I have the WorkingTitle mod installed.

Is there something else I can tweak to make this possible so I can make the autopilot track the GPS?

One word: Vertigo

VL3 at its roots, but more souped up and more fun. Works with the WT G3X mod which gives you your GPS autopilot back.

Are you sure it doesn’t work?
I am away from home for a couple of days and can’t test it but I could have sworn it responds to the key binds for activating GPS/NAV.

(I’ve never found a way to interact with the glass cockpit in the VL3 but had the keys mapped to physical buttons on my hotas anyway.)

Thats interesting, I would be very interested to find out how the modder made VL-3 follow GPS. Will get it!

Yes I have tested it several times. I plan a GPS route, the magenta line comes on the screen but it wont follow it. I will test again, your comment about keybinds have got me thinking about if ive missed something - like souce = GPS. Will check, do some tests and get back!

Your second point - if you have the Working Title mod you can control the autopilot using mouse controls.

On the PFD look up to the middle top area and click the area I have shown. The screen will go into split screen view and you will see Autopilot controls appear on the right side of the screen which you can press with the mouse.

The Vertigo is pretty awesome. Although if you don’t want to hotrod the VL3 to funny car levels and like to fly the VL3 and wish it had a little more “get up and go”, there’s the more realistic mod below which gives your VL3 a Rotax 915 engine. Along with the WT G3X mod, it also has AP functionality. Or at least it did the last time I flew it a couple of months back.

This looks a good match for what I need because I am following along on Zara Rutherfords RTW flight. Shes flying a Shark LSA with a max speed of 300km/h and this 915 mod looks to be the closest match to a shark. Although Sharks engine I think is 100HP Rotax 912. However default VL-3 is excessively slow. Asobo needs to get the performance fixed. So this mod will be great thanks!

Yes, the VL3 is kind of a slow plane. It’s my favourite for low level sightseeing, because it can go slow and not fall out of the sky. But getting it back up to speed takes a while.

The Rotax 915 iS mod gives it some pretty serious, but realistic kick, as the 915 is actually an engine option for that plane IRL. It can still do its slow and low, but will take off like a scalded cat when you firewall the throttle. But not at an unrealistic speed like the Vertigo.

That said, I tried the Vertigo, and it’s a ton of fun. An 850HP turoprop engine on what’s only slightly heavier than a paper airplane is pure insanity and unadulterated fun. But it’s about as realistic as an honest politician. They basically took the engine out of a TBM and put wings on it. lol

There is also a Rotax 912 mod out there. Check Flightsim.to

Its loads of fun and to make it even better its inspiration is a real world tiny plane (Lancair) that really has a 850shp PT6 in it. Amazing thing and holder of the current world record in its class. Vertigo gives some idea of what it must be like to fly such a beast

Agreed. The Vertigo is a ton of fun. I knew it was based on a real world plane (not a VL3 airframe), I just couldn’t know which. It’s purpose-built for that ridiculously overpowered engine. LIke I said, they basically took a PT-6 engine and found a way to put wings on it. lol

I learnt in a hurry to bring the power up REAL slow in Vertigo and that you can be blasting off the runway and in a 3000FPM climb at like 25-30% power, such fun.

I would imagine the same in the real plane Turbulence, the torque must be off the scale and if you’re not ready that prop and the runway lights are getting to know each other in a hurry!

VL-3 Rotax mod is one of my go-to aircraft. I find the Vertigo a little facetious. The 915 mod cruises at 155 mph at 34 in. MAP and 5000 rpm. Take off at 44 in. MAP and 5500 rpm, yet great for slow approaches and off-field landings. Great mod. using the WT G3X autopilot system.

The 915 is an excellent mod Im really enjoying it  The modder has done a great job of matching it as close as possible to the RW airplane.

Vertigo is like an F-16 aha! Turbulence (the real plane which inspired Vertigos modder) really does have blistering performance. Patey said Turbulence can climb at 7000FPM. It can max out at 705km/h (380kt)

An article, some performance specs are at the bottom.
