I agree wholeheartedly. Every bit.
what I find great about this sim, is how you can see the terrain/mountains surrounding airports.
IRL I dont go at every airport I’m dispatching my planes, and seeing how they look in the sim helps to get a better picture for the difficulties that my pilots may encounters
What’s silly about the FAA is that whether your simulator is “certified” and loggable or not depends on how much you paid for it. A stock Redbird is not loggable. A $5,000 one which is EXACTLY the same as the one you can buy for $1,000 is loggable. And I can tell you without a doubt that my home sim setup is ten times better than any Redbird. Still not loggable. Heck we have a sim that is literally from the 1990s at our flight school that is loggable, and the graphics are like FS95. I’ve got time from that thing in my logbook.
In essence I’m fine with it actually, because while I think home sims are fantastic for procedures and keeping your flying brain active, I would never in a million years use a sim to maintain my IFR currency. No way I’m plowing headlong into IMC without having done it in an actual airplane (real or under the hood) in the past 6 months. You can’t get the leans on your desk chair.
Clearly you don’t drink enough red wine. I can simulate the leans quite easily
Yep, I’d been planning to get back in after 19 years all year long, but Covid slowed that down a bit… the release of MSFS pushed me over the edge, and, two and a half months later (1 and half months to finally find an available instructor (I actually went through 3 because of availability issues) and 1 month of training (7.5 hours of flying)), I had passed my BFR
MSFS was a big help as I had zero experience with GPS, not to mention I figured out how to hook my EFB up to it and that helped me learn how to use that. The Garmin trainer combined with RXP in FSX and then the GNS530 addon by @ScorpionFilm422 were a huge help with getting to know the 530 that I had in the Warrior I was flying!
Congratulations!!
Yeah, it’s kind of funny. Where I got my flight lessons they specialize in simulators as well. I spent an hour in one… It’s pretty much the equivalent of FS95, maybe worse. Elite iGate 603. It does have better controls and working cockpit gauges, but, the control of the plane is no better in feel than with my CH Products Yoke and Pedals… Maybe a little better on the yoke.
i used to be a baggage handler like you, until I played too much Flight Simulator, stole a jet and crashed it…
Kind of sad story, really.
Congratulations wise fella
This one is also FAA Logable, has no Outside view, and is from the 50"s
No computer – all analogue OP maps, but it flies really well, and has the correct hardware feel to get have got certified, way way back … and i believe is still so …
It’s because the FAA can’t actually go into everyone’s homes and verify that their sims are up to legal standards. Even though someone may have an up-to-date sim with current navdata and a reasonable yoke/throttle setup, not everyone will. So, it is much easier for at home sims to be “non-certified” by default since it wouldn’t be legally sound for the FAA to just certify the software itself without knowing what kind of hardware an individual is pairing with it

They could sell a package.
They could but you’d still need to get your individual sim certified by the FAA. X-Plane does something similar to this whereby you can purchase an “FAA-approved” version of the sim that has certain features required for certification, but they are clear on their website that getting the actual certification takes more work than just the software part itself. The FAA needs to verify the hardware is up to standards
Yes, I bought it (really cheap) on Ebay, about 8 years ago – as is - with the idea of using it as a base for a Home Cockpit. The Gauges are really nice – but they are all analogue, so would require a lot of work to interface to say FSX or MSFS.
If one puts any price on one’s time, it far less costly to just purchase modern digital gauges, to make a home cockpit - but I have really given up on the idea of a dedicated Plane Home Cockpit … but its a cool machine to play with, and fly really nicely … and so nice NOT to have to use a “Mouse”.
Pretty sure it does not have it’s original FAA certification paperwork – never really checked all the manuals… played about with it, fixing it - ie the OM light was incorrectly wired from factory, and must have NEVER worked … and all the Electrolytic caps were shot … but once “refurbished” – it was fun … No Outside view, so it was 100% IMC all the time, but after you landed, ther was even a light that came on, if you had a good landing.
Even simulated winds, strength, direction and gusts … for a Computer-less device, it was very neat.
OH yes, one other GREAT FEATURE – never had a CTD when running it !!!

Well, I do have some German in me… Schroeder was my Grandfather’s surname, I don’t think he ever figured out where that side of the family emigrated from, around the time of the American Revolution I think? Maybe before, I’d have to check…
German and Scottish / Irish and English on my mom’s side, All Portuguese on my Dad’s (Azores and Avanca his parents came from). Interesting, looks like he had red hair, too! Kinda spittin’ image!
