Does the prop pitch change in the sim? Some planes with constant speed props show the pitch of the blades different in the hangar than they appear in the sim (sitting on the ramp)/ Do the blades change angle in the sim? I am adjusting the prop rpm lever but I don’t see the blades changing. When I feather the prop before shutdown, they look the same as they do when I don’t. Am I doing something wrong or are they not animated?
Which aircraft?
Without the engine running prop pitch will not change.
I was trying it on the C208. If I feather the prop before shutdown, should it look different after shutdown? I was wondering how they were in a different position in the hangar.
No, there shouldn’t be any difference. Feathered blade angle doesn’t change.
Haven’t tested lately, but the inability to feather the prop on the 208 was a bug for a long time.
I’ll check it ASAP.
Just checked (on ground) and the feather animation is correct, although feathered prop RPM is way too low at ~130RPM.
In flight prop RPM doesn’t drop below 200 and the blade animation will not show the correct feathered position.
From an aerodynamic POV it unfortunately doesn’t make any difference in MSFS if the prop is feathered or unfeathered.
Thank you for this information. I am going to test it now.
Follow up, tested. feathered, shutdown and I do see the correct position.
SU5 did indeed fix the 208 feathering bug. I also took the opportunity to alter the apron.flt to set the prop and condition levers all the way back. I’m including a screenshot of the edited version compared to the original backup. The only caveat is that the prop still starts at fine pitch, then rotates to the correct feathered position within a couple of seconds, but it’s still nice to be able to start cold and dark with the levers in the right place.
The 208 engine should be started with the prop lever full forward, not in feather.
Every PT6 start I’ve ever seen has been with the blades feathered. But since the blades shouldn’t move with the engines off, I just keep the lever back until I’m ready to come out of ground idle. It may not be “proper,” but it gives the correct visuals.
Not true, the Kingair (in real life) can be started with the prop levers in either position. Without oil pressure the blades are always feathered so yes every PT-6A starts with the propeller blades at the feather stops, this does not mean the propeller lever is in the feather position. When starting up with the prop lever in the feather position the prop remains feathered, with the prop lever in the full forward position the propeller unfeathers and moves to the fine pitch position corresponding to power lever position during start-up (when sufficient oil pressure becomes available).
