PSA: LOD Slider Can Be Increased Past 200 - Dramatically Improves Photogrammatery

Wonder what other surprises are hidden in the cfg file.

Something is broken in the caching.

I just tried deleting my cache file and making a new (bigger) one.

Next flight the terrain, buildings and trees were far more populated into the distance on normal HIGH profile settings.

HOWEVER. I then noticed as I approached an area, the trees were disappearing, only to be slowly replaced with thinned out spindly trees, which then blossomed into full trees as I got closer.

So there is a fight going on between cached data and base data, and the poorer cached data appears to be winning.

And I just had a CTD - first one in ages in the sim. Certainly first one since launch.

This is interesting indeed, definitely seems the cache system is wonky, considering it can take 5-10 mins to create a 50g cache, I mean doesnā€™t it just need to reserve that space ?
Excited to see where this goes as I can say the visuals donā€™t seem to be working for me as shown in many YouTube videos with very similar specs and 600Mb internet.

Thatā€™s about what I got as well. Roughly a 20 FPS drop on average. The difference is crazy though, I think itā€™s a fair trade off.

Another flight, another CTD. But scenery is definitely much better.

Off for a 3rd tryā€¦

The crashes are happening as I come in a 2500ft over London heading NNW.

Never been a problem previously.

Oh and the first crash was a total BSOD. Second one was a FS2020 CTD.

And this machine has been rock solid for 3 years running other sims, and the alpha/beta.

Not too sureā€¦ What specs have u got in that regard if u donā€™t mind me asking?

i7-8700K OCā€™s to 5Ghz all cores permanent incl with AVX.
64GB RAM
GTX980Ti Strix factory OC 6GB
M.2 boot/sim drive

Running 1920/1200 rez

Frame rates vary between 25 and 45 depending on location.

Like I say - rock solid for years on FSX/P3D and others.

About to try another flight without VSYNC60. This time controlling frame rates to 25 with RTSS. All settings in sim as recommended by MS profiler on first run - ie HIGH END.

No tweaking this time.
No config file tweaks either (as there werenā€™t in the previous two flights.

ah ic, ive got
-i7-7700k 4.8GHz
-32GB Ram
-GTX 1080 FE
-SATA SSD for the SIM

You have a better CPU and more RAM and the GPU is quite similar. I dont quite get why i keep getting crashes with the increased LOD as it uses a lot of RAM but not quite at the point where it exceeds my RAM or VRM

Only those file I have to modify ?
{Terrain
LoDFactor 2.000000
}
{ObjectsLoD
LoDFactor 2.000000

I have it now to 5, performance is the same ( 30 fps - average, everything as high as possible, Bloom and Depth of Field are Off )
RTX 2080 Ti, I7 9700K@ 5 GHz, 32 GB DDR4, resolution 4K
Iā€™ll try it a bit higher than 5

The interestng thing is my LOD now looks good on the standard 100 settings, since I deleted and made a bigger cache file. Far too early to tell if this has fixed it, but something changed for the better.

I previously last week filed a large detailed bug report with many screen shots showing the poor scenery lod. If my success continues I will update that with the news. Even if the enhancement doesnā€™t continue long term I will still update the report as it may point to a solution for the devs.

Have you tried limiting your frame rate with RTSS externally from the sim and turning VSYNC off?

I now have a seemingly reliable sim at 25fps (RTSS) and it is still smooth.

Gotta love this sim when it is working properly!

I personally went from locking my frames through Nvidia and was thinking it was smooth but after doing a couple of flights, my LOD and the autogen was popping in and out.

So I turned the settings back to default in Nvidia and then set the frames to 60 through the flight simulator and it worked magic. Autogen and LOD was massively improved. Getting an average of 35-40 frames.

So many conflicting reports about Vsync and frame locking vs unlocked vs Gsync on/off ectā€¦
there is clearly something odd going on in the background and im starting to think its the Azure server load and how much of it gets allocated to your instance from one run to another.

Yup. The reports are so conflicting, Iā€™m starting to wonder if what is actually happening by making a ā€˜bigā€™ change in your settings, maybe it is just triggering a refresh of the cache or some other factor is being reset/reloaded to make it work properly again.

Obviously only flight time will prove one way or the other.

Try lowering the AVX OC by 300mhz? It could FS2020 uses those instructions sets while p3d and fsx do not?

Entirely possible. Easy to confirm I think? Load an area with pre populated rolling cache then turn off online functionality?

Now I can finally use all of my 64GB of RAM! haha nice

AVX clock offset of -3 (-300Mhz) is the standard BIOS setting for AVX, but I worked long and hard to achieve a stable AVX 0 offset and it is entirely stable running stress tests and benchmarks at AVX 0 . So I doubt itā€™s that, but Iā€™ll bear it in mind thanks.

Iā€™ve been using RTSS to limit my frames and hoped this would be the answer for me but unfortunately, I see no difference. LOD issues has been one my biggest complaints with flight sims. I do have P3D tweaked enough to not have that pop in problem. Was hoping MSFS 2020 would have that issue taken care of out of the box. A bit bummed. I also notice if I turn off Photogrammetry the default autogen seems to load far out in the distance. With photogrammetry on, I see where the black houses endā€¦

Cudos! Never got AVX running stable on my 9900kf at 5ghz

Awesome discovery! Thanks for this!

Seems like 3.0 for both is the best!
