Quest 2 and Virtual Desktop resulting in an empty gray void

I’m trying to use Virtual Desktop to stream FS2020 wirelessly to my Quest 2. When I enter VR mode, it launches SteamVR and begins to flash between an empty gray void and SteamVR. It eventually settles on the empty gray void. Meanwhile the game is properly rendering on my computer monitor.

If I open the SteamVR overlay I can see the game in the background on my headset, but once I close the overlay I return to the empty gray void. The SteamVR overlay performance is absolutely horrendous as well. The overlay is jumping all over as I move my head, it’s disappearing and reappearing, and my inputs take like 10 seconds to register.

My other games run just fine through Virtual Desktop, so I’m not sure what gives.

I’ve verified that my OpenXR path is pointed to the Steam version which from what I understand is necessary for Virtual Desktop to work. I am running the Microsoft Store version of FS2020.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way to fix it?

Found a workaround. First of all, in SteamVR settings, I had my per-app video resolution set to 500% which was blowing up my computer and slowing things to a crawl. So I reset it to default. Second, after getting the gray void, I CTRL+Tab to exit VR mode which opens SteamVR home, then I CTRL+Tab again to close SteamVR home and return to FS2020 VR. This fixes the gray void! Note that if your CTRL+Tab isn’t responding, make sure to set focus to the FS2020 window by clicking on it.

So this works for the sim if it was purchased via the Microsoft Store and not Steam? I’ve had the same problem so I’ll have to check it out!

Yes. If you’re still having problems make sure your OpenXR path is set properly:

Open regedit and find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1

Verify that ActiveRuntime is set to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\steamxr_win64.json (or wherever your SteamVR is installed)

At first i was also in the assumption that virtual desktop only would work with the steamvariant of the game. But after changing the openxr path to steam (like twisted mentioned) it worked.
You can change it in the properties of steamvr in your steam account.

After that you start up steam vr and virtual desktop. Then you start the game from virtual desktop the same way you would on your flat screen. Then hit ctrl-tab and the game goes into vr mode once youre in your plane.

Edit:
You dont have to use the oculus software at all btw!

Hi,
in VR via Virtual Desktop (VD) / Steamvr , I get a very low fps (± 50 )
with FS settings very low (render scale 80, no AA, all settings to Medium or Low except for texture detail High) ,
SteamVR video settings set to render at 80% as well.
VD set at 80Hz.
Have a beefy pc (rtx 3070 and ryzen 9 5950x 32GB ram).
I read it’s better to go OpenXR (but then need to use the Link cable instead of Virtual Desktop).
Are you getting better fps , and getting anywhere near 80 or 90fps?
If so, please share what you have different , cause I too would love to enjoy FS2020 via Virtual Desktop in a smooth and wireless way on the Quest2 .

Cheers and Merry Xmas!

Hi,
I first had problem with VR Streaming via virtual desktop, so tried the Tipps from the following topic: „ Installing OpenXR for Quest 2
I don’t know if the openxr setting via SDK are working with the active runtime from steam VR. Did you try the openxr developer Settings?
