I managed to do something with my access point that is giving me much better connection speeds when using VD, not actually sure what i did as i dont think anything changed but i have a linksys velop setup and the only thing i can think of is i wired the upstairs velop node to the same switch my PC uses so im hoping this has improved things in that area anyway.
i did a few flights yesterday and switching back to desktop changing settings and reverting back to VR all seemed to work without issues, i was getting a single flight and then after switching to back to desktop VR would work properly and was very stuttery and the VR headset would keep flicking through 3 different image over and over which wasnt pleasant.
I still had the odd flicker and stutter but it was alot better than previously, i just need to work out how far i can push things to see if i can get the images to be a little better without introducing any issues.
I have a 3080 with an i9 10900 32gb ram so i think i should be able to get more out of it but it would be good to get link working so i can see if its the connection thats causing issues or if i have reached the limit to what i can get out of things as they are.
I know VR is still early days but so far its a completely different experience flying, just got to work out the menu buttons so i can still interact with ATC etc but im sure that will come in time
Having and active helpful forum really helps especially for newbies like myself, thanks for all your help
Simply installing Oculus desktop software should setup OpenXR, I did not have to do anything. Also make sure the cable is in a direct port on your computer and not through a hub. If you switch OpenXR thorough SteamVR then it will mess it up but resetting it can be done by removing and then re-installing Oculus. For me, SteamVR is completely redundant as any Steam game that supports VR will ask you anyway if you want to run it in VR.
I think that may be my issue, because i went down the VD route after i updated my Q2 i think this is what is causing the issues with Link.
Ill give this a try when i get home tonight and see if this helps solve that issue, seems a shame that we need to reinstall in order to change the OpenXR settings each time it gets switched from VD to Link but it shouldnt take many moments to reinstall. need to go back to the good old days and have seperate profiles.
If its just a reg key thats being changed i wonder if it would be quicker to backup the reg for each version and swap them each time i use the other method (if that makes sense) im sure there is more to it than that but may make it a little quicker when checking the two methods against each other to see which is better.
Ah ok ill have a dig around and see what i can find, i think i may have seen that before but then a different post suggested something else so ill see if i can find that one again and see what needs to be done, hopefully that is what is causing the issues with Link and once its changed it will work, i may go for a reinstall of the software anyway just to make sure there isnt anything else and then once its working do the registry swap and see if that works.
It may be that Link is a huge difference and then ill just stick with that but it would be good to compare the two just to see the difference.
ok i tried these settings last night and i got Link working as well as VD and Air Link so alot happier now.
Settings have improved all of the methods a great deal and managed to get a few flights in using various aircraft and the graphics were so much better.
I still have a slight issue with Link, i load it up as suggested but when i go from the desktop over to the VR image the menu bar and everything around it goes all swimmy like water rippling, once in VR i found that Link looked good but the head movements seemed a little more jerky than VD
When i switch back from VR to desktop again it all goes swimmy and it seems like the headset is struggling to load the home screen so i start receiving part images and the home screen begins to break down into lines etc, if i close MSFS everything seems to revert back to normal so i assume it is something to do with MSFS.
I have two aftermarket cables but to be fair thinking about it i only tried one last night, i have now splashed out on the official cable to see if there is any difference just in case the cable is the issue.
I can return them if its no different.
One think i noticed is that AirLink allows up to 200mb streaming yet VD only goes to 190mb, i have an 800mb connection according to VD so it would seem that i could go higher with these wireless methods if they allowed it.
any further suggestions with link would be greatly appreciated, has anyone else had this issue or is it normal
I’ve had that a couple of times and the way to fix it is reboot the headset. Not sure of the cause but I think it’s just on some occasions (probably using the debug tool) it gets the refresh rate messed up or the data rate and it all goes wrong. My cable (a 5M one) manages a 2GB rate on the test with Oculus so it’s probably just a random error.
is anyone else having issues using VD recently, i had recieved an update in the headset and the streamer looks to have been updated as well (ill have to check on the version numbers)
now using VD for VR is pretty much impossible, i can get things to load but i keep getting flashing VR screens before it gives up.
I switched over to using Link and Air Link and these appeared to be working better than they had before so i assumed maybe an Oculus update may have happened and has messed with VD in some way,
Now using Air Link is pretty much impossible, when i get to the home screen and move my head its like there is a 5 second delay and the screen slowly moves around as you turn your head, if you move to quick everything is out of sync and there is a large balck section of the screen until it catches up.
im using the oculus reg and i have the oculus tool open along with the debug tool but still the same issue, im using the 90hz mode and in the debug tool i have the distortion curve set to default, encode res set to 3000 and encode bitrate set to 350 everything else is default.
What am i doing wrong / what has changed to cause these issues. im connecting to my wifi router thats directly in front of me (not wifi 6) VD says im getting 800mbps on 5ghz, but i have also tried using my wifi 6 pc card as a hotspot but got much lower speeds but still the same issue.
im going to give Link a try to see if that is affected in the same way but so far both wireless methods are not usable and im not sure what has changed that could have caused this, is there any pc / nvidia settings that i should be looking at to see if they have been changed at all, i did so much in order to get it working in the first place im not sure what part actually got things working and cannot find the guide that i followed, i think it was a mixture of this site and a few others along with youtube but i dont remember.
As always any help would be greatly appreciated, im not experienced with VR setups at all so im learning as im going.
just tried in link (using official cable) and head tracking seems smoother there is no huge lag but it still will not go into VR, it just crashes the Sim
I appear to be on v29 in the oculus desktop app, trying to downgrade by coming out of beta caused an update loop and the only way to solve that was re enable beta again so i appear to be stuck on v29 in the desktop app
i seem to be on v28.0.0.221 in the headset with no updates available , yet runtime version is v28.0.0.230
until i can work the issue this is pretty much useless to me at the moment
im at a loss as to what i can do to get this resolved.

i have uninstalled and re installed the oculus desktop software, i get an error when going into link mode something about oculus not being able to update but i can click ok and things carry on, i start MSFS 2020 and get to the fly screen, i then select the VR option and all i get in the headset is the grey warehouse with waiting and on the pc screen i see the 2 windows but it flicks between vr to b;ack back to vr and keeps doing this until the flight sim crashes to desktop.
Anyone with any ideas of what i can do to resolve this, very frustrating, spent hours on this so far today and i dont appear to be any further forward.
