Quest 2 PC Cable Question

Just got a Q2 for Xmas. Just didn’t come with a cable. The OEM cable is pretty pricey, there are aftermarket ones on Amazon for less than half the cost. Anyone have any advice on whether the aftermarket ones are just as good or should I stick with the OEM cable?

If your PC has direct ethernet connection to the router don’t use a cable, use AirLink for Oculus wireless connection.
Before wireless I used a £25 cable from Amazon.

I had an after market cable from Amazon, it works fine but it does drop the connection frequently. I think this might be a problem with the oculus software as I’ve heard it happens with the OEM cable as well.

If you can sit near your router, then AirLink is the way to go. I use that now and there is no performance difference from the cable and it never drops out.

I initially got a cheaper cable from eBay. It worked fine but I didn’t like how thick the cable was, especially when turning your head to look around the cockpit. I then purchased the Oculus cable and it was a great step up - very thin and flexible.you hardly know it’s there.

My only problem, similar to what was mentioned above - I find using a cable with MSFS and Oculus software to be unstable. If I Cntrl-Tab in and out of VR more than one or two times during a flight session it lags like crazy and requires a restart.

I tried Oculus airlink and found it a lot more stable and still delivers the same quality, as far as I can tell. I still fly with the Oculus cable plugged in to the Quest but it’s only charging the battery. Admittedly you could use a phone battery pack and USB C cable instead.

Not everyone has issues with the cable though, it may depend on the type of motherboard, PC configuration etc. I have a fairly good PC with no overclocks but it’s fairly generic in the sense of software/hardware and I couldn’t figure out what the issue was. Thankfully airlink was available so I just switched to that instead for MSFS.

I’m using a wired connection to my router. Do I have any other options to connect wirelessly to the Quest? Possibly via the PC’s onboard WiFi?

Would I be better served connecting the PC to the router wirelessly? It’s literally a foot away. Always figured a wired connection was faster than wireless.

Keep the wired connection between your PC and router. Oculus airlink makes use of the 5 GHz wifi on your router.

Your Quest 2 can connect to 2.4 and 5 GHz wifi from the router. In this instance you’ll want to select the 5 GHz frequency because it’s faster.

Whilst some of our other devices in the house are also compatible with 5Ghz wifi, I limit it to just the Quest 2 only. That way I know I’m getting maximum performance. The bandwidth on the 2.4 GHz frequency is more than adequate for everything else we do on the other devices.

I bought a cable for the third of the price a year ago, it did work fine, then I bought Virtual Desktop, about 20 $ US I think, available on Oculus and Steam, probably on some other platforms, I do prefer Steam, better deals often during the year compared to Oculus, and now I can use my main VR games on WiFi. not being ‘hooked’ to my computer is a great feeling for using the simulation apps, namely FS2020, IL-2 Sturmovik Stalingrad and others Great battle addons, Dirt Rally, AeroFly FS2 and X-Plane 11

Note : it does run at 5 GHz, and I did not encounter any major problems, sometimes it does lose tracking for a few seconds but more on my racing game than FS2020
