Quest 2 users!

I have to commend and applaud Asobo. I am explicitly sharing this with fellow Quest 2 users. For a few days now, I have been testing DLAA in the latest BETA update in VR, and I can honestly say that I have never experienced a better experience in any simulator (I used to be an XP11 fan, but the scenery just killed me). I used to use a rift S, but for the past year or so, I have used a Quest 2, and while many have based the Quest 2 with the link cable as JUNK (and I was nearly ready to pack it all in, with bad frames and white oblique bars coming on the screen). But that all got fixed with a bit of patience and some research.

Lately, I have had the most beautiful flights (butter smooth and flicker-free); it’s like a completely different simulator with this new build. Many are not too keen to move because they are worried about a reinstall, but I can honestly say that I have had no problem moving back and forth. I am on Steam, and it has coped well with the transfer. I have changed my community folder name when making any updates so there are no conflicts and no problems on this side.

Let me tell you where I have come from and why I am saying this. I used to have a 1080 GPU. Yes, it was trusty and excellent, I sold it to a friend who is currently using it and is very happy with it.

So I upgraded my PC with the following specs: AWD-IT Voyager 7 iCUE, AMD Ryzen 7, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, 3TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080.

I had some excellent experiences, but it wasn’t right in the sim with VR, and the flicker wasn’t significant. Also, I found my settings in the headset were not right! Furthermore, SU10 was up and down. Then a friend helped me go through my headset settings, and I also upgraded my CPU recently to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which was probably the most significant upgrade. Then I tried the sim with SU10, and it still wasn’t much of a difference. This week Asobo / MSFS launched the BETA update with various graphic abilities, and it is a complete GAME CHANGER.

I have remained for now on DX11. I have now tried the new setting DLAA which in my opinion and for my system, is incredible. I can honestly see every single crack, shine and transparent pixel in the headset in every scenario… One would think I am looking through a Reverb or even possibly an Aero(yes, going far, but not that far off)! I have tested them all. There are so many different variables, but as someone who has simmed for 30 years, this has been the best experience to date. I achieve an incredible 45 FPS solid. The picture is smooth, there are no micro stutters and everything looks great. This is also from point A to point B.

So I am hoping these settings help someone:

Quest 2 (headset settings):

Refresh Rate (90Hz)

Rendering resolution (5408 x 2736)

1.5X

Oculus Debug Tool

The only setting I change in this is the FOV to:

0.7, 0.8

(having two different numbers 1 apart seems to bring more clarity - a tip I got from a friend)

MSFS VR Settings:

Top part only (the graphics settings you can play around with until you get this right for your system)

Antialiasing: DLAA

Render Scaling 100

Reprojection Mode: OFF

World Scale 90 or 100 up to you

NVIDIA REFLEX LOW LATENCY - ON+BOOST

Global rendering quality - Custom

Terrain level of detail is 150

objects level of detail is 100

most settings are on high

The only setting I have on ULTRA is the off screen terrain pre-caching.

I do not use Open XR Toolkit anymore because it is not needed.

I hope this helps someone, and I am over the moon with this new option.

Well done, Asobo. Finally enjoying this after a long time of testing…

DLAA

Hey I’m sorry to ask a stupid question on your topic. I also have a Quest2, but it looks like the game is not finding it when I press the CTRL+TAB keys. No headset found error message.
I tried searching everywhere but it looks like everyone is saying to go to ‘regedit’ and change the ActiveRuntime in OpenXR. When I check mine I see it’s on the default ‘C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json’. Is it right to leave it like that? I also enabled the public testing option in the oculus app.
I really can’t understand what I’m missing or doing wrong. Should I download something like an openXR toolkit? I’m SO lost.
Thanks …

nevermind… I had to connect the quest via link lol. Forgot that simply connecting the headset and powering it up doesn’t mean it’s connected to the pc for use haha

@Pilotpete123

Thanks for sharing your experience, glad to hear it’s working very well!

I also use a Quest 2 and will be keen to try your recommendations.

Cheers

I am on SU11 and DX12 and found that DLSS DLAA gave me slightly blurrier glass cockpits and 1-2 fewer FPS than TAA. This is Quest 2 via Virtual Desktop Ultra mode (max resolution) on a 3090. Maybe I should try with DX11 again

I found the same results earlier. It’s really a no brainer to me, blurrier cockpit with fewer fps or clearer cockpit with better performance. I chose the later and went back to DX11 and TAA.

I have same VR and RTX2060 but when I choose DLAA I didn’t see these options. Why?Do you know anything about it?

Thank you for sharing your Quest 2 tips and settings.

May I ask, in Oculus Debug Tool, what is your encoding bitrate set to, and have you experienced with different settings?

Bitrate is set to 0

Same with the 2080 Super. Not seeing those options. There is a latency setting in the NVidia Control panel though.

Have played with some of these settings (including DLAA), and, for me TAA 100 and DX11 is the sweet spot. i9-9900k OC to 5.0GHz with a 3080 TI.

Haven’t messed with the reflex low latency setting yet. Not sure what it does, to be honest.

I do use OXR Toolkit with FSR 90 and FFR Quality/Wide.

Provides smooth, stutter free VR with my Quest 2 + Link Cable. Even on VATSIM running StreamLabs… Works for me, but others may have different experiences based on system.

Other settings here. Try it as a baseline and tweak, is my recommendation:

I’m using a Quest 2 with an RTX3060 and Ryzen 9 3900X and my VR experience has been lacklustre and very disappointing.

I’ve watched all the videos on how to get the best out of MSFS with the Quest 2 but none of them made a difference and I had settled in to the conclusion it was done to the lack of power from my RTX3060.

HOWEVER…

I saw this post on a Facebook MSFS VR group and decided to give it a try while not expecting any improvement from my blurry, low LOD and clunk VR experience in MSFS thus far, and the results were…

WOW!!!

Applying all of Paul’s settings exactly as detailed in this post turned my MSFS VR experience completely on it’s head delivering sharp, smooth and slick visuals the likes of which I had never seen before with my humble homebuild setup. I’ve been flight simming since 1982 and worked in IT from 1988 writing Windows programs and HUD/HDD software so I like to think I know my stuff but I am somewhat flummoxed by how Paul’s settings work so well considering I’ve tried various combinations of these settings time and time again.

I really suggest you give this a try if your VR experience is leaving you disappointed, hopefully you will reap the same benefits as I have done and you’ll not want to take your headset off.

Thank you for that information. What a difference using VR after tweaking those settings. I have a love hate relationship with VR. On one hand it is an amazing experience and the other without the full immersion of realistic flying. My system isn’t powerful enough to reach that stage as I can only use 3rd party aircraft on flatscreen but what this does show is that we are creeping ever so near to achieving flat screen immersion on VR. If I can fly stutter free with fantastic stable visuals (odd burp) with my Quest 2, 2070 super, i7 10700 and 16gb of RAM then the future looks amazing. To be clear to anyone with a similar system to me I had to dial down your settings a bit but it still looks and feels amazing. I don’t fly the fighter jet normally but I honestly felt a bit sick which shows the realism is cranking up a notch.

Who is Paul and where can I find his settings?

I’m on a quest 2 3060ti i7 12700 32gb ram and these settings are basically unplayable for me. Not sure if I’m missing something… are you on windows 10, WU10 or 11 beta?

Yeah, who is this Paul guy who holds the secret recipe for our VR troubles?

(Quest 2 with RTX 3070, quite disappointed with the performance).

Who is Paul?

i could tell you but then i’d have to kill you afterwards :face_with_peeking_eye:

DLAA is most definately the best option available for VR at this stage. In my opinion. I like TAA but its just a little too heavy on the system at this stage. Furthermore, lights on runways and at airports look that much better with DLAA and especially on line up and approach.

From my side I have not your same experience. DLAA is sure most light, but worse in quality.
For me the winning formula is TAA + SS 1.4 + ASW 30. Top clarity and good performance (RTX 3070TI)
