Quest 2 + Virtual Desktop = Upside-Down Image and Only One Eye

So I’m trying to get back into MSFS2020 and I play in VR because I don’t have head-tracking and moving the camera in flat-screen is a complete dealbreaker with sims for me. It’s just too much of a nuisance and I can’t get used to it. Whether it’s the joystick on my T16000M throttle (which is kinda broken), the hat, the hat on my joystick, or taking my hand off the joystick and using my mouse. I just can’t. I hate it. Anyway…

I can play just fine using Oculus Link / Air Link but I would prefer to use Virtual Desktop, as I use that for basically everything else.

I find the image blacks are more black and the colors are more accurate with VD as opposed to Link. Anyway, I digress…

When I enter VR mode in MSFS2020 while connecting with Virtual Desktop, after ensuring the OpenXR runtime is set to the SteamVR version instead of the Oculus version, my right eye is completely black (as if the screen for my right eye was just completely turned off) and the image on my left eye is flipped upside-down.

Any idea why this might be? I can’t figure it out.

Hmmm… that is random hey.

Are you using DirectX 12, OpenXR toolkit, or sim update 10 beta?

Just trying to think what might cause that.
I take it all your other games are working fine?

No, no, and if the update 10 beta is something I need to manually op-in to, then no.

I was trying to get it working again and changed the openxr back and forth a couple times. Then I opened SteamVR and just had it running in the black space dashboard, used the desktop view from within SteamVR and opened MSFS. So I am in the VR view in terms of VD, cause you can double tap the left controller menu better to switch back and forth between “desktop” view and VR view, but using the desktop view widget from inside SteamVR.

I’ve used VD in the past and iirc you don’t need to have SteamVR actually running to use VD but… Whatever figured I’d try it.

Anyway, loaded up msfs and switched it to VR mode in the menu and seemed to work there, which was farther than I was before. The right eye being black and screen flipped upside down in the left eye was even in the menu.

So I loaded up a flight quickly and it was really strange. When I was looking straight forward it looked like it was properly in VR mode, however it was like… The VR view confined to the space you would see when you’re in your headset in flatscreen mode… And the head-look was not working, so at soon as I turned my head I was like wait what, cause when I was looking straight ahead it looked like I was properly in VR mode.

I opened up the SteamVR dashboard and checked desktop mode, and I could see the stereotypic window there for MSFS…okay. closed that.

Then, if I open the SteamVR dashboard by pressing left controller menu button once, I would head-look movement, but only while the menu was open.

I switched back and forth between VDs desktop and VR view a couple of times to see if it would fix itself, nope. Closed SteamVR because it’s technically not even needed to run…nope.

So yeah. No idea. Very odd behavior happening here.

No issues with any other VR games while using VD.

Hmmm, that is a tricky one.

Given that it works in airlink, cable, etc. that’s suggesting your headset itself is completely fine, which is good.

I’m not in front of my headset at the moment so I can’t check, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Virtual Desktop is capable of “other” VR modes (i.e. it can be used in conjunction with VorpX to convert games to 3D via different modes, e.g., side by side, split etc).

If it can in fact do that, I wonder if there’s a profile that’s gone wrong somewhere?

I suppose the easiest way to check would be to uninstall the VD app from your Quest 2, then re-add it again. If that doesn’t work, remove the streamer app from your PC and try reinstalling virtual desktop altogether.

As I said, it’s very odd… at the moment this approach is the only thing I can think of sorry that might help.

Cheers,
