Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop Checklist for Dummies?

Is there a simple recommended checklist for launching MSFS (Steam) with Virtual Desktop on a Quest 2?

Trial and error is quite a pain with the amount of load time it takes.

I’ve gone through some of the older threads that are locked, but it’s hard to find a concise answer.

Why do you want to use Virtual Desktop?

The Quest 2 runs fine using the native Oculus OpenXR runtime.

If you were using Virtual desktop for wireless, that’s not needed anymore either, it supports Air Link.

I wish it did for me! It may just be the Windows 11 issue I’ve experienced.

I get terrible performance over the link cable, kind of bad over wifi link and very stable over Virtual Desktop.

For me it was just a matter of making sure Oculus is set as the OpenXR runtime, and that ‘Unknown sources’ is turned on, and it worked.

Are you on Windows 11?

I’m going to give it another shot tonight. At least now that I’m more experienced with it all I can do a better comparison.

Oculus is supposedly doing a new link system native to the headset. So it’s nice to see they are putting some effort back to the PC.

I’m on Win10 myself. I normally give the early adopters a year or so to iron out all the bugs before I make the switch myself.

and of course; make sure that both your Oculus desktop app and the headset are fully updated

LOL, I’m ironing for you.

What problems were you having with virtual desktop? Since I got a compatible router it has worked great for me, I prefer it over link as can reduce gamma, and I don’t use ASW so don’t have to bother with disabling that as VD doesn’t support it anyway

Firstly MSFS should be set to run Steam VR runtime, sounds like you have this already

Then it’s just a matter of starting the streamer on the PC and starting MSFS (doesn’t matter what order). Then when you want to enter VR (either in menu or in flight), put the headset on, open VD and connect to PC so you are viewing the large 2d screen, then press the keyboard shortcut to switch to VR in msfs. Steam vr should launch automatically in the background.

I have recently been having a minor issue where when I first switch to VR, the tracking doesn’t work properly and I’m in a kind of VR/2d hybrid mode. To resolve it I press the shortcut again to go to 2d, then once more to go back into VR. This only seems to happen for my first flight of the day, maybe it is to do with steam vr initialising or something, but not too big of a deal.

I don’t have any problems with Virtual Desktop. It’s the Oculus link that doesn’t work. But I did have a hard time the first day. There are so many options and trial and error to go through.

I tried again after all the other system changes I made, the Oculus link is still unusable.

Now I just start up MSFS and Ctrl+Tab when ready.
