I recently purchased this VR headset and am in the process of setting it up in 2024. But - no matter what settings I try the cockpit resolution is unusable, unless I’m a virtual foot away from what I’m looking at. And for most setting combinations that get close, fps is in the teens- so not usable. I’m beginning to think I’m not going to get this working.
However, when I’m cranking with low fps and a higher resolution my GPU is working 50% or so and only using 9 out of 12 GB and the CPU threads are busy, but nowhere close to maxed out.
My system: Ryzen 9 5900 XT, RTX 3080ti 12 GB VRAM, 32 GB RAM. Current gaming MB. I have to use the link cable (2.5 Gb) because my man cave has poor WiFi reception and will only get 700 Mb. (The PC and everything else is Ethernet to high performance router). So I can’t use Virtual Desktop and almost all the YT setup and tuning vids use that.
I am using the OculusDebugTool but not sure the settings I’m using are appropriate for the hardware I have. I’ve tried all the different anti-aliasing settings (TAA seems best for cockpit resolution), lowered the 2024 graphic settings that pertain to external scenery to low (except texture resolution), tried the LODs from 20-150. I am using the ‘recommended’ settings in the Meta Quest Link setup.
Anyway looking for someone who has got a similar hardware configuration working in 2020 or 2024. I feel like given the moderate hardware utilization there should be a solution to this, and I’m just not finding the right combination of settings in the various software components involved.
I have very good performance with non-VR, especially with Frame Generation.
I had a 3060 and had bad lag using the cable. Then tried VD and haven’t looked back. It smoothed out performance so it was usable and cockpit resolution was good. I would suggest trying something like a router mesh so you can boost your wifi reception. I try to stay away from multiple apps to configure VR. I do have frame gen applied now.
Meta Quest 3 VR settings 72 Hz, 4128 x 2208, Automatic for Intel(R) Core™ i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz, Nvidia 3080, RAM 32 Gb, Windows 11 with PC Link and Steam VR:
So your desktop is hardwired into the router via ethernet cable? You could get a wifi 5 or 6e compatible router, have the ethernet cable connected into that, and then your computer connected into the new router as well. This would give you an ideal setup for being able to use Virtual Desktop. Just set the new router into Bridge mode and you could be all set.
Like others, I was never able to get acceptable performance using the link cable and the Meta desktop software. Virtual Desktop completely changed the experience. I run all of my setting in a mixture of high and ultra with a few of the heavy hitters at medium.
First of all, frame gen isn’t a VR thing, lol! With VR I don’t enable this but I do enable dx12 (with 2020) and disable HAGS and turn Game Mode off.
Secondly, you need to do a bit of google research in order to find what may work best for your PC system and how and where you want to fly in msfs 2020/2024. I mainly only fly in VR with heli’s, low and slow, in cities like LA, with lots of rooftop hopping.
For me, with my QPro/rtx4090, non-ptc v77, I get the best results using the official link cable connected to my z790mb usb3.2 gen2 type-c port at 900mbps max dynamic bitrate (usually ends up at 750-800mbps).
I set meta-link device/graphics to 80Hz refresh rate and the res slider full right. All ODT settings defaults/zeros except pixel density = 1.30, asw mode = Forced 45fps, asw off (gives me 40fps with 80Hz refresh rate), distortion = low, dynamic bitrate encoding = enabled, and max dynamic bitrate = 900mbps. Meta-Link usb speed test = 2.5Gbps. These ODT settings also work fine with Air Link btw. I mainly only use my Q3/512Gb headset with Standalone and wireless PCVR with Air Link with a good wifi6 router setup (not 6e). My Q3 actually works pretty well with msfs2020/2024 but distant clarity isn’t quite a good. Also, my QPro’s better quality Qled screens with local dimming produces better colors/blacks. Q3 is still very playable though.
Currently using 576.28 Nvidia driver (DDU in safe mode used to uninstall previous drivers), clean/custom install without Nvidia app. I use Nvidia Control panel to set 3D global to all defaults except power = prefer max performance and quality textures set to High Performance. Followed by using Nvivia Profile Inspector (latest github version) to set all global dlss overrides and presets set to Latest.
Anyway, this is what currently works best for me. If you, and many other Reddit posters, find VD works best for you, that’s also great imho.
Thanks everyone. A couple of thoughts. Yeah Frame Gen - it’s not a VR thing - no setting to even enable it. I’ve figured out that I’m mainthread CPU limited, and my GPU is only at 40% utilization with 9 out of 12 GB VRAM in use. With proper ODT settings, and very low MSFS graphics settings, but everything set so the cockpit is clear enough to work with, I get 22 fps. Which is not acceptable. I followed FSPRIMO’s analysis of this, experimented with all the settings he focused on, and that’s the best I can do with my current rig. That’s with the link cable.
I’m installing a Wireless Access Point which I will connect to my Ethernet switch here in the basement, which is wired to the router upstairs. I’m only getting 180 Mbps on my WiFi down here which is not enough to provide a valid test of the Virtual Desk WiFii method. So then I can setup the VD version and see if I get enough juice out of that to make this feasible. I need to get to solid and continuous 35 fps with ODT 1.3 Pixels Per Display Override with 0.6 Tangent Multiplier in order for this to be feasible. So basically I need a 50% bump up which I highly doubt VD is going to do. But - I’m going to give it a try anyway. Nothing to lose.
Thanks again for helping. I’ll post after I get this next round of configuration and testing done.
I’ve been using Link with Q2 initially (since FS2020 SU8 in 2022), and picked up a Q3 not long after release.
Using SunlitAlpaca’s settings nets me the best experience I’ve had yet (thank you!) It probably helps that I have similar hardware (Z790, 14900K, 4090) but I just can’t get the same performance using wireless Link.
Granted, I haven’t tried VD, but I’m loath to spend money on an app I can’t test the performance of first.
I’m running a ROG GT-BE98 router about 150cm away from where I fly so connection speed/signal quality is a non-issue, I’ve just never been able to get the thing to run smoothly using wireless Link.
