Quest Airlink vs Virtual Desktop

I touched on this in another topic. I recently did a new high end spec PC build.

One of the experiments I tried was to see if the native Oculus streaming would work any better on the new build. This is both for WiFi and over the OEM link cable.

The general conclusion I have is there is no way to tweak the native Oculus link to come close to the clarity and smoothness of Virtual Desktop. There is also no way to tweak down Virtual Desktop look as bad as the Oculus link.

For the Oculus options, the Airlink connection did look better than the cable. Even the Oculus home room looked really bad over the wire.

However, I see people saying they have better results with Airlink or the Oculus cable. Outside of not being able to hardwire to a good WiFi AP, I’m not sure how people are able to use Airlink.

In theory, the cable should provide the best experience.

For me, I have a Wifi 6 router from TP Link which works with Airlink pretty well. I must say some days are worse than others but in general this works. Cable link is worse than Airlink, sure that! Im trying to find reasons to try Virtual desktop and if its worth the 20 euro’s trying. I see opinions good and bad and need to find out if I can link this without any Steam client and using Windows version of MSFS. Hope someeone can give good feedback. Thanks in advance

I have tried and use all three. Sometimes one seems to be better than others. At the moment Virtual Desktop doesn’t seem to want to work well and link looks terrible and even Airlink is not as good as I have had it. All settings the same, I7 and RTX2060, fast internet, nothing else on the FS network. I’m also experiencing possible Quest 2 overheating with Airlink now. I have had some very immersive smooth experiences with all three and better clarity with all three over a long time. Two days ago I just couldn’t get rid of the water wobble effect on Airlink and link whereas the day before it was much better but not as smooth as I have experienced. Many variables in this sim.

What is the Virtual Desktop issue?

I’m on a G2 now and WMR really makes me miss Virtual Desktop.

I have the same experience and asked the same question previously but no real answers… Maybe it is because others are not running virtual desktop at its max settings, or have network limitation or something.

I do get a tiny bit of colour banding with VD, which I do not get with link cable, which is to be expected with 150 bit rate. However the crispness in the VD picture more than makes up for it, along with the other features like gamma adjustment. Link could maybe compete if they made the link sharpening feature adjustable - for me it is too blurry when off, and over sharpened when on.

Also windows 11 may factor in since Oculus doesn’t support it.

I’m mostly happy with the G2 now but it doesn’t give me quite the same smooth video and has random wonky problems. The Quest 2 for whatever reason can make 20fps look okay. But that’s only over Virtual Desktop for me.

Not sure what my VD issue is/was, the sim would not switch into VR/Steam. I was happily in the VD environment. I just wanted to fly rather constantly run test flights and trouble shooting.
I have a G2 too but bugged by the bouncy cockpit views. I actually like the feel of the Quest 2 on my face better and can be smoother although sometimes the image can look like an oil painting or tapestry but I think FS is at fault there as other times I can have a good experience.

The G2 is really fussy about where it’s positioned on your face. The sharp field of view is so very narrow. Without that good alignment the clarity can be worse than on the Quest2.

I also find it’s harder to look all the way up or all the way down to the floor without having to grab and hold the headset.

I have the motion damping set to 40% in the OpenXR toolkit. Even then it still gets bouncy but it’s bad on default settings.
