Question about multiple visibility/etiquette

With EAA Air Venture going on now and a lot of simmers wanting to shoot the famous Fisk approach, I got to wondering what is the best way to handle larger, and more organized events like this as a stand alone player.

For example, I want multiplayer on so I can follow the conga line in, but I don’t use anything like Vatsim to stay organized. One of my questions is, is multiplayer traffic just everyone on the server including Vatsim players? I ask this because while I’m not able to communicate with them, I also want to try not crowding in or stepping on their toes. Likewise, would I be visible to them and their controllers able to work around us non-Vatsim users?

Obviously I have the option of just trying to maintain my own separation and go it alone, but I’m wondering if there’s a community preferred way of handling it.

nope. Vatsim traffic is separate from multiplayer. There’s typically two methods for getting a multiplayer fix if someone doesn’t want to play Vatsim:

You can join VATSIM as an observer where you can’t be seen by other players or ATC. You can tune in to ATC and clip through all the people waiting to leave at runway whatever as you can’t be seen. No toe stepping here. You can be part of the conga line but you also won’t receive any flight followings and it’ll be up to you to deduce your separation and managing radios. You can still be heard while in observer mode, so to avoid any accidents, simply don’t bind a Push to talk button in vpilot.

If you’re sticking with regular in-game MP, you could join a discord with your mates (or find a group to make some new ones) and join them using in-game MP/Group Only to see them without joining VATSIM and you can simply use discord to communicate separation and what not. Most of the Asobo-hosted group flights are done this way if i’m not mistake

Hope this helps

If VATSIM users have multiplayer on, they have to ignore all of the mp traffic, follow ATC instructions, and only react to the aircraft in VATSIM. Having multiplayer on might make things more immersive, but it’s almost worthless, especially if there are legit conflicts (as opposed to, say, the 747s landing at St Barts).

if i recall correctly, CoC says if you’re connected to the network, you must turn Live and multiplayer traffic off. Simply because “traffic alert Boeing 747 2 miles from your 11 o clock” could mean any 30 747s flying around were you to have MP on.

I think you guys are missing the point a bit. I don’t want to join in any MP sessions (Vatsim, group flights, or others). I just want to fly on my own while having other traffic around during the flight, and want to make sure I’m not impeding them.

Thanks for the Vatsim info, though. I wasn’t sure if they saw regular MP traffic.

I don’t quite understand this. Do you want real world traffic or other MSFS players flying around?

If you want to fly an event but not have any traffic whatsoever, just set up the event flight parameters (dep/arr airport) and fly the flight. You won’t see other event traffic (real players) unless you’re connected to MP or Vatsim

I figured other simmers in this case since it’s not IFR traffic, and I run FSLTL.

the only time you will get other simmers in your game is if you enable Multiplayer (to get everyone and their mother) or connect to VATSIM.

Beyond joining a discord, there is no way to corral all the multiplayer kiddies unless you’re participating in an event of some sort. In other words, outside of vatsim, there is really no accepted etiquette because there will always be someone who spawns on the runway and someone else who tries to “crash” into you and another person who low passes you while you’re trying to take off and so on.

Guys, I don’t know how to be any more clear, so I guess this thread may as well be closed if this keeps up.

I WANT to have MP active.
I WANT to see other people flying.
I WANT to be considerate of others flying by not imposing on them.
I DON’T WANT to use discord, Vatsim, etc. to chat with others (I have my reasons).

I didn’t think it was such a hard scenario to imagine considering most people are flying on their own as it is, even with MP active.

No kidding, but I’m not asking, nor caring about them. I’m asking about my own actions and how to not be a bother to others in a unique situation.

So just be considerate. Don’t over think it.

So just fly your plane normally and not worry about other people? I’m really having trouble about what it exactly is you want. Do you want me to say “if you want to yield to a bigger plane on a taxiway, flash your landing lights 3 times?” There really are no rules when it comes to a situation as you’ve described (MP on, seeing other simmers etc). You are free to fly in whatever way suits your needs whether it’s starting cold and dark at the ramp or spawning on the runway and just going.

You missed the point of what i was saying. There are no rules in regular MSFS multiplayer. You can fly like a real world pilot to the T or you can fly like a…not good pilot or you can fly somewhere in between. Those other pilots cant read your mind nor guess your intentions regardless of how well mannered or in service of others they may be. That is why planes are equipped with radios so you can say “hey, bigger plane to my right, you can go ahead since you look like you’re in a hurry” or whatever. However is voice communication is no go for you, options are limited into what niceties you can provide because nobody will be able to figure out what you’re trying to do other than sit there while you’re yielding to bigger planes or going around when someone spawns on the runway or whatever it is you gotta/wanna do in that scenario.

Nobody is going to tell you how to fly in MSFS because a pilot is a pilot. That goes for etiquette too. You go to VATSIM and discords and all that if you want etiquette and not bothersome; both options are usually friendly to those who are unable to participate using voice comms.

IF you want to enjoy a multiplayer event and not have people popping up in front, buzzing through your cockpit, dive bombing, spawning inside you.
Id recommend using 'LIVE" lobby rather than “ALL” lobbies.
Live will allow you to see those that have the same settings as you with the addition of live weather and time.
ALL allows you to see EVERYONE on that server in that area. If you are in live or all or private, everyone in ALL can see you, but if in LIVE or PRIVATE you will not see majority of them
