Radeon 6800xt or RTX 3070?

I’m building a new pc to run flight simulator as exisitng 6 year old one won’t cut it. Going for something based on AMD AM5 platfform for longevity (fingers crossed) with 7600X cpu. For the graphics card I had been looking at NVidia 3070s - anything better just too expensive. But I can get AMD radeon 6800xt for the same price (in the UK). That sounds attractive, a card one if not more steps up for same price. Not sure what resolutions I’ll be running at, probably 1440p maybe 4K as monitor can do that, but that would be a nice to have. Any thoughts as to what’s best for flight simulator 3070 or 6800xt ?

Go for the Radeon. I’ve bought a RX6800 16gb card last month for only 600 euros and am really satisfied.
It’s faster than a RTX 3070.
Or… just wait few months and buy a newer series 7000 radeon card.
They will be cheaper than Nvidia’s offerings…

Thanks, patience to wait for the new cards is a struggle!

I moved from a 3070 to an XFX Speedster Merc319 6800xt and the fps boost was massive in DX12 @1400p. The extra VRAM is also God send here too.

DX11 performance is about the same, due to Main thread limitations.

The ONLY thing I miss right now is DLSS which helps with multiple monitors. Hopefully FSR support in SU11 closes this gap.

The 3070 is going into another rig. It really struggled @1400p with D12 and pop outs. Not enough VRAM.

My 6800xt using the 255w good bin Radeon Monster profile from 1smus runs cool smokes the 3070 and 3080 in synthetics as well as real word comparisons for titles I play.

This is my first AMD card and I’m very happy.
I have no use for Ray tracing so no love loss there.

I’m returning a 3060ti I recently bought. Terrible performance on 1440p ultrawide on high settings.
I’m seeing good deals on the RX6800. I do have bad pass experience with Radeon cards but I’ll probably take the chance. 16gb would probably be better for 3440x1440. Was getting 50fps sitting at KATL but that’s clear skies. Signifant drop in fps when clouds are present

The 3060ti is only playable in demanding locations on medium settings. Not the GPU for WQHD.

Won’t be missing DLSS. The implementation isn’t good in this sim either way.

12GB vram seems to be the bare minimum for this game moving forward.

My RX6800 in combination with FSR2 is really awesome.

Just have to wait for a refund. Not sure which RX6800 brand to go with.
The 3060ti was a twin Zotac. Had no idea the cooler was garbage.

Mine is an Asrock,

Do you have this issue? Vertical bands DX12 AMD RX6700XT
One of the reasons I sticked with Nvidia.
Cloud texture shows vertical lines AMD DX12 - #48 by wavesandsky It does seem to only affect the 6700 series cards.

Nope, never had this issue…

Whatever you get I highly recommend a graphics card with at least 16gig of vram as this will get you smoother fps in MSFS. I upgraded my RX 5700xt in early summer to a RX 6800 (no XT) w/16gig vram and I’m very happy with it. The recent support of FSR2 in SU11 works very well with my Ryzen 5900x and Rx 6800.

Newegg has the 6800xt on sale ATM but there return policy is a hit and miss. I’ll get either the rx6800 or 6800xt. AMD does seem to pull ahead in DX12.
Guess I’ll be saying goodbye to Nvidia. It’s a pity they don’t have 16gb cards in that price range.
Almost bought the 3070. Glad I didn’t. The 3070ti is well over 600usd with only 8gb. " Nvidia":man_facepalming:

The RX 6800 is faster than the 3070ti in many benchmark tests let alone the RX 6800xt. Just make sure you have enough room in your rig for the new card to fit. My RX 5700xt barely fit on the width so I made sure that my new cards dimensions were going to fit.

It’s a full tower case. Has plenty of room even for the 4090 :skull:. As long as the card doesn’t come DOA. Still debating whether to order on newegg or amazon.
I am looking at RX6800 the reviews especially the one star ratings.

For some reason I still prefer Nvidia. Have never had any issues with their stuff. Been with them for nearly a decade but the VRAM usage in this sim is insane!

I’ve always had good luck with Newegg, however, they do make returns a little difficult if you just don’t like the product or change your mind. You absolutely can’t go wrong with Amazon imho.

Oh, and make sure your power supply is hefty enough. Sounds like you should be good but AMD says you need at least a 650w PS for the RX 6800 but the RX 6800xt is 700-750w recommended minimum I believe.

Edit:
I have: Ryzen 5900x, 32gig, RX 6800 w/16gig vram, 2x1TB M.2 NMVE running on Win 11 @4k on QLED TV with MSFS settings at all ultra and TLOD at 200. Smooth as butter locked in at 40fps. I alternate between GPU limited under ~2000 - 1000ft to main thread limited above 2000ft in dense areas.

With DX12, vram usage is very optimized and typically uses 14-15gig. FSR2 is wonderful and there is more detail with the ground terrain with less effort from my GPU.

My current specs is an i7 10700k 32gb,
It has an old GPU sitting it ATM.
PSU I have is a Seasonic Focus 750W platinum
As long it can drive my 3440x1440 it should be ok.
The 3060ti is no slouch. The 8gb of VRAM just makes it less appealing for WQHD. Probably offer great 1080p performance.

Its looking like Nvidia 40XX midrange cards will have more than 8gb vram but they will have a premium price.

As the original poster I am finding the discussion useful, thanks. At the moment the monitor I am using is an old 24" one only supporting 1900 x 1200 resolution so at that i guess most cards are going to work. To that end I got a used 5700xt as a temporary measure. I will probably succomb and get a new ultra wide monitor at which point I would need to ugprade the card. Whether I can hold out until the next step down in the new cards come out (7800xt) I am not sure though if not the disscussion so far will be of use.

I notice several posts have mentioned using DX12, is that an advantage then if using AMD cards?

I’ll be picking up my RX6800 on Monday from microcenter.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
This will be my first AMD after all these years.
Coming from an RTX 2060 super there should be a noticeable difference even in DX12.

I might even browse those 4080s :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

My budget for a new card was 1000 Euro but when i got a great deal on a RX6800 i could also buy some Thrustmaster TPR pendular rudder pedals for 400…
Greatest deal ever… :grinning:

Haha, i told you…
