Radeon RX 6800 - Constrained by GPU As of Latest Update

Evening chaps,

I’ll cut straight to it. Prior to this latest patch, i’d play and be running a mix of ultra/high-end settings - get approx. 30-40 fps depending on the aircraft, much less if in the 787 in LHR for example but be primarily contrained by my CPU according to the in-built monitor. My CPU is just a Ryzen 3600 running at standard clock speeds.

Now i’m not saying the RX 6800 stock clocks are the best, but as of this latest update for MSFS, the game now running around 5-10fps worse and says my GPU is what is constraining my frames. I don’t really understand this. I’ve changed no hardware, no graphical settings but yet my game is now saying i’m contrained by my GPU. Also MSFS claims to only be using approx. 3gb of 12gb total VRAM.

So I check a few hardware monitors to see what’s going on and i’m not getting the card maxed out by any means. It’s hovering around 70-80% usage with temps not reaching the level that i’d expect any thermal throttling at so i’m at a bit of a loss on why this could be. My drivers are up-to-date.

I don’t really have too much idea how these things work, but looking at the ingame monitor for GPU, the graph does turn yellow quite a lot. What does this mean? As in what is it telling me with that yellow colour change? Is it that the game is demanding so much infromatrion on screen that the card cannot keep up with? I’ve noticed a number underneath with the unit “ms”. What exactly does this mean?

Sorry for all the quick-fire questions. I’m just a bit confused as to why I’m suddenly contrained by my GPU when it’s not been a problem before. I should also note that changing from medium, to high, to ultra/high doesn’t really do anything in terms of framerate either… maybe a difference of around 3-5fps. Why is this?

“ms” is milliseconds. 1,000 ms = 1 second. If a user is seeing only 10 FPS, then each frame is taking 100 ms to process. If a user is seeing 100 FPS, then a frame is taking only 10 ms to process.

There is no information about everything on the Developer’s FPS counter. Some users are primarily concerned about having the highest possible FPS. But since there is no documentation about the FPS counter, it is challenging to determine the optimal graphics settings, changing my graphics settings from Medium to High gives me about a 10% FPS drop with increased stutters and pauses. Going from High to Ultra makes MSFS unusable as FPS drops below 10 FPS. But the quality and. Detail in each frame is incredible!

For some video cards, if GPU % utilization is between 90-100%, it is pushing out the highest FPS to the monitor.

Try not to focus on FPS as the only way to measure MSFS. Focus instead on what looks the best to you and stay with it. There are too many hardware combinations to determine an optimal configuration that works for everyone all the time.
