RAM for the MSI MPG CARBON X870e Motherboard

I am thinking of buying a new build PC from CyberpowerPC UK (really don’t want the hassle of building it myself) and opting for either 64gb (2x32) or 96gb (2×48) DDR 5 RAM from their online build store. Looking at the motherboard QVL I can get:

  • 96gb Kingston (KF564C32RSA-48) CL 32@6400
  • 64gb Kingston (KF564C32RWA-32) CL 32@6400

I am pretty much a novice at calculating RAM latency but think it is 12.5 for both sets.

The processor I will be getting will be the 9800x3d. Whilst this has not been released yet I am assuming that it will be okay to use the same ram as the rest of the 9000 series.

I have the following questions which hopefully somebody here can answer:

(1) Both of the above RAMs have XMP profiles and not EXPO profiles. Will I have to manually dial in settings to get the highest speeds i.e. 6400?

(2) Will the 96gb RAM likely be too much for the CPU controller (which I am guessing will be the same as the other 9000 cpus). I know it will probably work but there is working and then again working badly. Should I just be sensible and go for 64gb? Presumably it will take longer to boot up at least with the 96gb option?

(3) Would it just be better to get the minimum RAM from Cyberpower (16gb) and buy a better RAM from another source? My budget for the RAM is probably £400 maximum. I am based in the UK and would prefer not to have any hassle with import duties etc.

Any other advice here would be very welcome too.

if you are planning for absolute stability, get the Infiniti fabric default speed (i believe 6000 is the default value) with lower timings. Not sure how kingstons are good nowadays i only use G.skill, Crucial and Corsair Dominators. You shouldn’t see any major difference with faster mhz ram.

6 years ago i would talk totally different, but last 6 years i switched to play all games @4k resolution and hold myself from buying more enthusiastic ram other than default sweet spot rams. Never had any stability issues or crash due to overclock. Losing 2-3 fps is no issue since i aim for 60fps on my triple screen setup.

No matter what ram you going to go, go with 2x32 or 2x48 sticks. Dont do 4 stick setups.

Note: My comment is based on full simulation games. No fps games or other stuff.

You’re buying a motherboard from MSI, I think it might be best to post this question on the MSI forum. They’re likely to have more specific advice and support.

The issue is that most Zen 4 and 5 memory controller won’t tolerate 6400 MT/s, at least not without voltage tweaking. I would recommend getting 6000 MT/s for this reason, as EXPO should work on every Zen 4 and 5 setup without any voltage tuning. You can manually overclock it to 6400 MT/s later if you want.

It may seem counter intuitive, but 24 GB Hynix M-Die is generally easier on the memory controller and easier to stabilize than 16GB Hynix A-Die. This is likely partially due to the slightly looser tRFC and tRRD timings on M-Die. I would get the 2x48 GB kit for this reason.

Very interesting. I really didn’t see that one coming :+1:

What did you go for in the end as I’m basically building the same pc

9800x3d
4090
Msi x870e carbon

I ended up ordering the 96 gb Kingston (KF 564C32RSA-48) CL32 as part of a new build from CyberpowerPC UK. The motherboard ordered was as above, the MSI MPG Carbon x870e Wifi also with the 9800x3d.

The PC is due to be delivered this week (hopefully) so I will give an update on this when I have received and tested the PC.

My next big decision will be what to replace my current rtx 2070 gpu with. I am basically waiting on the black Friday sales now and looking at the MSI Rtx 4080 Super Gaming x Slim or the 4080 Suprim x. My PC case is a white Corsair 6500x so the Suprim will fit but, heck, that gpu is so big and heavy. I could wait for the 5080 but think I’ll just end up buying the current generation. Not sure I can be bothered to deal with the probable scalpers and the initial launch supply issues.

Crossing my fingers the build works okay :slightly_smiling_face:

I can’t seem to find anything above 16gb sticks on the configurator at 6000hz only the Corsair platinum but reading online it only runs at 4200 with this mother board

Only one I can get from Kingston is 6400. Do we think that will be fine ?

This is what I ordered. As to whether it will be fine it is too early to be sure. I would really need to test it in my own PC to be 100% sure.

I did check to see that it was on the MB QVL list and it was on the list. I asked Cyberpower also if they would guarantee the 6400 speed but all they said was that they would do their best to achieve the highest speed they could. Understandable reply I suppose since nothing is really guaranteed in life. I guess we will see.

Well hope you get it soon and be sure to let us know

My head is done in with it might just stick to Xbox :rofl:

This is what I have at the moment just waiting to order really just don’t have much clue about computers

I’d love one I could turn on and just play with our much tweaking

Do we think the power supply would be way too much for that ?

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

Slightly nervous to be honest as I never bought a PC from Cyberpower PC UK before.

Will keep you updated.

I’m local to them (10miles) I’ve heard loads of good things about there customer care etc

I have the MSI MPG X870E Carbon WIFI motherboard and the Kingston KF564C32RSA-48 RAM is on the list of compatible RAM.

Important note: Make sure to get a separate invoice for the motherboard as you’ll need it for MSI rewards. After registering my motherboard and writing a short review, I received a $50 Steam wallet credit (5 codes each worth $10) and a Steam code for the game Unknown 9: Awakening.

edit
Alternatively, the invoice should list the motherboard model.

I went onto the pcpartpicker site (pcpartpicker.com) and added your components to a new build. I guessed a little bit with some of the components (the 4090 gpu model for example) and the build came in at just under 800 watts. Just to be sure that I haven’t made any mistakes why not try going onto the site yourself and confirm or validate my findings?

Personally, when looking at a PSU I would want a leeway of at least 50% (for future expansions or power surges etc) so I would definitely not go below 1200 watts myself for a PSU for your build. For my own build I chose the Corsair HX1500i although I have to admit here that this is probably way way over the top for my own needs. I like to buy only once though and this should last a few years even if it may use a bit more electricity at idle than a lower powered one. I should really emphasize here though that I am no expert and others on here will be much better qualified than me to advise :slightly_smiling_face:

As a side note why not contact Cyberpower Customer Services by email support or 'phone for anything you are not sure about? I contacted them by email (good audit trail if anything goes wrong) for quite a few things and they were very helpful.

Best of luck. Please keep us updated on your own build too :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you. That is a great tip. I will try this myself :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks the one I checked said between 800-860 so yeah the 1200 might have to do just wasn’t sure if it’ll effect anything and judging by your reply it won’t do anything but use even more electric
