Really bad performance - low FPS and stuttering

About 2 months ago, I formatted my C: drive, reinstalled Windows 10, upgraded to windows 11, reinstalled MSFS etc… After all that, and even before that, I was not getting these sudden random FPS drops (I had other issues).
These fps drops basically started to happen after the latest MSFS update as far as I recall. If I was the only one with this problem, I alwas assume it’s my system, but many, many people have reported the same issue. So, I still believe it’s up to MS/Asobo to fix this.

Don’t know if Asobo is going to fix this. It’s been two years so far with the issue.

Same problem here. I usually get around 25fps at Gatwick but recently, just 7 to 8 fps.

I am using an I7 (k) processor, 3080ti card and 32gb of RAM.
Most settings maxed out but only 300 LOD.

Currently flying FBW 32nx and Fenix A320.
FPS with TBM930 is quite a bit better.

Had this issue many times, the latest was yesterday with a flight in the Fenix. No issues for the first 4 hours then the FPS dropped to single figures with the sound crackling and the autopilot over controlling the aircraft (due to low FPS) normal FPS is between 30 - 40, this is in VR. Not had this in MSFS until recently.
Vive Pro 2
2080 TI Liquid Cooled
64GB Ram
MSFS installed on a 1GB M.2
AMD 3950X
I’ve been unable to complete a flight over 5 hours as the system becomes very unstable (sound, FPS).

Hey Mate,

which airport were you flying to. I found out, that when I used the free Istanbul Scenery from Flightsim.to, the game starts to lag even more. The Issue, which you can see in the Video, occured yesterday again in the Fenix, as I left turkey. Still, it’s not the only cause for the performance.

I was flying from LFPG (default) to OMAA, a flight time of about 6 hours. The FPS issue started about an hour from destination, whilst in the cruise. I’ve no addon scenery in that area (nearest would be about 900nm).

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (3.7 GHz)

I’m getting 25-80 fps with the default Steam version. There was some stuttering with ver.10 initially but that is no longer occurring.

“All drivers updated”
Try using CCleaner. MS will say everything is current but it will find drivers and running background progs.
That’s probably not the problem but it might help.

Since I re-installed the scenery i experience the issue also 45min to 60min in. Lags and sound stutters occur and I don’t really know what to do. I uninstalled the scenery and reset my settings.

LOL! Truer words were never spoken. It’s amazing how many people can not get passed this question.
It’s just not fair!!!

Lots of things here in this thread to try myself, to perhaps gain some small improvement in performance on my very low-end laptop (5 yr old Lenovo with a 1050ti GPU). But I want to share a recent phenomenon with you, first. I haven’t really found this mentioned before.

After WU10, I experienced a similar performance degradation in my formerly fairly smooth running sim - about 25FPS with 0 stuttering and 0 CTDs. Granted I had everything tuned down, pretty minimalistic add-ons, etc. etc. However, no matter what I did to try to eliminate this new, seemingly “out of the blue” degradation, nothing worked.

Until I uninstalled WU10! That simple process corrected my stuttering instantly. So, I reinstalled it, certain that the stuttering would return. BUT IT DIDN’T. Why? I have not a clue.

To be honest I am only running the U.S. and GB World Updates now, with no additional livery, scenery or airport add-ons, but that is basically the same as before.

Bottom-line suggestion: It’s a simple process to remove the various massive World Updates to see if it helps. The rest is fairly intuitive. Good luck!

Win11 Insider Preview 21H2 user here. Spent the better part of the past week troubleshooting MSFS on my system because I wanted to get back in and enjoy the TopGun content.

I was getting CONSTANT stutters with every setting possible. What finally fixed my stuttering was disabling the x-box game game bar completely. As in uinstalled with power shell, completely gone from my system.

I also disabled the NVidia Overlay and I’m now flying 100% buttery smooth again.

Interesting. My lowly little lap-top is supposedly not “capable” of running Win11. But that’s kind of off topic. (It’ll be awhile before I can afford to upgrade.)

Anyway, it seems like everyone has found a different way to improve their sim’s performance.
This is the first time I’ve heard about removing the X-box game bar. Will definitely keep that suggestion in mind.

What…where is this Xbox game bar? I don’t think I have ever seen it🤔

Windows key simultaneously with “G” normally brings it up.

Hello,

I’ve done some testing and im pretty sure why the game does, what it does.
Ive used the Fenix A320 in every flight with the same add-ons installed and saw some changes only, when I changed the scenery. It first appeared after I installed the Istanbul scenery and stayed, altough i uninstalled it - probalby messed up the chache or file structure. After I re-installed (or deleted everything except the Asobo packages), I haven’t had the issue. I was flying from Shanghai to Hong Kong and the issue appeared again after almost exactly 50 minutes in. The game became laggier and stuttered when looking around or changing cameras - it’s gotta be the scenery (doesn’t matter if payware or freeware)!

I don’t know why some scenerys have this issue and why Asobo’s game and file optimazation is so bad, but i know a trick which can help resolve the issue until you have such a scenery/add-on which messes up the game.

Put all Community and official files in seperate folders and delete the rest. Then go to e.g. Steam and uninstall and reinstall. Boot the game and if it starts to download the packages, abort and close the programm. Then drag and drop all Asobo files in the folder “Official” (found next to the community folder under “packages”) and start the game. You should load in the game normally with all the settings.
From there you can start to add the add-ons and troubleshoot and find out, which scenery/add-on is responsible for the lags.

But still, this shouldn’t be an issue and somehow only happens to some users. I don’t know why only some add-ons are affected and why this only applies to some users - Asobo should try to find out and work on the folder structure, because some add-ons conflict with each other (the scenery props and modellib files) → Would love to see more use of libaries instead of developers pasting the same files over and over in the add-ons, because FS2020 apperently can’t fetch files which are not directly located in the folder itself.

A theory is, that the airports are being loaded, altough you’re not even in proximity which leads to overload of cache and the MainThrad starts to go crazy.

Hope I could help you a bit.

I was experiencing really bad fps with a 3090, found out that either a driver update or windows update had caused my gpu clock speeds to be really low. I was pulling my hair out until I fired up the gforce experience performance overlay and saw the clocks acting stupid. I think voltage control or memory clocks might be buggy in the latest driver or the oc scanner.

I honestly cant make head nor tail of whats happening. yesterday i had main thread getting hammered. After tweaking to medium settings my GPU is tanking.

Every other game i have works perfectly on my system both old and modern. I just dont get it if it made sense it could be fixed but its like the sim has a life of its own.

I’m tired of “reinstall your Windows”, “verify your video drivers” or “reinstall your 159 Gb game” answers. Those are the first and basic procedures that any monkey would do. If you don’t know what’s happening please don’t post anything.

That’s being said, I simply can’t play smoothly the game with a processor running 5.0 Ghz and a 3080. There’s something very wrong with the last updates.

latest updates tanked my fps so much. unplayable!

if this happens mid flight just save the flight progress as a text files in the esc menu and reload the save and it fixes the issue. This makes the game refresh itself when you load back into the same place again so there wont be any low fps
