Adventure Yangtze

World Rivers X: Asia’s longest river

This route can be described as one of Asia’s great aerial journeys – a descent from the highest plateaus on Earth down to the most densely populated metropolis in the Pacific region. It begins in the Tibetan highlands, where rock, ice and thin air shape a landscape that looks like a geology textbook laid open.

As you head east, the landscape gradually opens up. The rugged heights of Tibet give way to the deep gorges of Yunnan and Sichuan, where the young Yangtze carves its way through immense rock massifs. From the cockpit, you can see dramatic valleys, mist, terraced fields and towns nestled against the slopes – a stretch that brings the river’s raw power into sharp relief.

Further east, the river becomes wider and calmer. The historic towns of the middle reaches, the great bridges and the vast plains demonstrate how the Yangtze has served as a cultural axis for millennia. The flight becomes more expansive, orderly, almost meditative, whilst the river shapes the landscape.

Finally, in the delta, everything comes together: Nanjing with its rich history, Zhenjiang with its hills, Jiangyin as an industrial hub, and the vast fields and canals that mark the transition to the coast. Over Chongming Island, the view opens up onto Shanghai, whose skyline appears like a vertical final chord.
