Alright I’m in. Gonna throw some tail slides, Cuban 8’s, and avalanches at it… The smoke don’t lie. See how well she one-wheels down the runway.
Can’t stop flying this little bird.
So after 2 hours of practice at Furnace Creek ( L06 ) i found out what was the problem about stalling: even if the manual recommends to idle-throttle to induce a stall, the plane doesn’t stall if you decrease throttle to idle. It needs around 15 rpm to stall, otherwise it will slowly fly down with the stall warning constantly beep-ing. I manage somehow to get 3 stall spins but i need more practice.
I haven’t even flown it yet, but check your cog is slightly closer to aft than center or forward, but still within range. I would think you need some nose up attitude at the stall(probably a fair bit), being you are stalling it on purpose to enter a diving spin rather than trying to experience rudimentary mush stall recovery. It’s still a thick airfoil high wing aircraft, not a short coupled Pitts or thin composite Edge 540. You can also try to flatten the spin with opposite aileron and some power fed in after a full rotation as well. I’m going to wring it out later tonight and see what’s what
The update is great, the aircraft handles much better in the landings,
well done…really makes me want to get back into a decathlon for real
I had a blast yesterday but could not get it to spin. Just dive straight down with full rudder either direction from level stall or raised nose. You can cheat it by flying a ‘spin like maneuver’ using ailerons.
However, everything else is pretty darn good, falls from tail slides and recovers normally, is quite adept at slow rolls, and can do just about any type of mashed up/messed up hammerhead. Flew around inverted about 5’ above trees and buildings for 20 minutes or so so no issues there.
Landings are slightly hard to judge until you get used to sight picture for the wheels but hold off properly and it will wheel land fine and settle the tail albeit with an angry stall warning even when planted firmly(don’t panic thinking you’re flying again!). A lot of tail draggers do this though. Even did stupid stuff like take off/immleman and full rudder parachute crabbed back and made respectable landings. I didn’t realize the SD was so capable, pulling off Monster NX moves with a few less ponies. Although the G-meter wasn’t crying foul so not doing anything that would break the aircraft.
Pleasant to fly as a normal plane, textures JUST good enough to be perfectly happy in the cockpit and enjoy great FPS, which I’m a big fan of that balance. Sometimes developers try so hard it tanks performance. You definitely want to be able to look around fluidly and roll and change directions without everything chugging in. No hokey glare on instruments and I must say the window reflections are quite fantastic, you can get a good sense of the corner bubble shapes. Both panels look great glass/steam, everything seemed integrated fine.
Need to setup a custom sensitivity setup for it, I was using the TB quad on the left with lever throttle/vernier mixture and prop with the TB flightstick(common bush profile I have). Reminds me a lot of the Monster NX but in a more honest normal envelope.
Gotta hone in the control setup and I’ll try spins again.
Thanks for the report - sounds exactly like my experience! I was worried I was going crazy, haha.
Of course i was wrong, the problem was my AoA. At least i’m learning something new with this plane. Still can’t spin on stall unless i use ailerons, but i’m working on it.
Think I was finding it worked best with 0% trim on T/O, around -7%-9% in fast cruise and aerobatics, and about the opposite 9% up trim on landing to get it to approach and settle nicely.
Moderator Edit:
I agree with you Xenonguy, also flying Super Decathlon for 15 years and the Hammerheads, Bolts and Snap Rolls are not performed as in the real one. We could be lucky enough to find someone who makes these modifications! Safe Flights
Concordo com você Xenonguy , também vôo Super Decathlon a 15 anos e as Hammerheads, parafusos e Snap Rolls não são executados como no real. Poderíamos ter a sorte de encontrar alguém que faça essas modificações ! Safe Flights
I beg to differ.
Charlie Morris (One of the testers) specifically went out in his Super Decathlon during testing to see what we needed to get the plane to perform the aerobatic maneuvers the plane is capable of achieving. He came back after many revisions to the flight model and was able to perform the maneuvers in the simulator. Here is a side-by-side video of just some of the testing I released yesterday.
I’ve found it quite rewarding and don’t see anything dishonest about it. Slow rolls take careful management of speed and flying through the rolls, hammerheads and tail slides work well. The only thing was the rudder-only spin, but is the Super D actually capable of doing that?
I’ll have to try some ‘enhanced’ spins with aileron and maybe try to flatten them out a bit with power. Got hung up on trying only rudder inputs.
I played around with CoG quite a bit but keeping it where it is default or just a wee bit back is where it should be. Moving it back past halfway makes it more prone to stall with aggressive elevator and uglies up the snap rolls. Snap rolls require keeping a decent amount of power on, it’s a lot of wing area to push around. If too slow or aggressively cutting power the un-stalled wing runs out of energy and it gets mushy and both wings start flying again.
I’ve been doing a bunch of Cuban 8’s, holding the inverted downline for a little bit and then adding a little rudder when rolling upright has this really neat grove to it, doesnt mess up the line just looks really cool from the cockpit. Although you’d get pinged for it if being judged…
Haven’t tried an avalanche yet, it crosses the top at speeds I don’t know if you can snap through it, as it’s not a tiny Pitts or little carbon fiber knife plane. 45 degree climbs with a hard chandelle is a cool way to turn around.
Hi ,
I just got the Decathlon . i learnt to fly in a citabria .
i think the cockpit is a little wide , there is a little too much elbow room .
as shown in the video side by side comparison …
only flown it for an hour or so at the moment , still testing out the maneuvers.
is the update through the market place yet ?
EDIT. i changed the cockpit camera position , now the sight picture looks better . I am tall and it just didn’t look right with the default cockpit camera view to what i recall from rl.
Update from Official Marketplace is today - Monday October 7th. Another very small update will be coming shortly after to finally fix the fuel coming from both tanks in the Glass Cockpit variants. See Version 1.0.1 notes in the above comment.
Version 1.0.2 is out now for the Super Decathlon through Hangar Studios 713 website - Its more of a patch than anything. Now the Fuel will drain out of both tanks in the Glass Cockpit Variants, sorry for the update bonanza, but this will probably be the last one until 2024 or close to its release. I wanted to get it out to everyone ASAP. Check your emails for the update link.
MSFS Official Marketplace will most likely get this update next week in one of the update timeframes, it has been submitted for ingestion today.
P.S. Might want to checkout my Discord for what’s all coming next. I’ll have some exciting news in the upcoming weeks
