[RELEASED] AS33 18 meter glider, freeware on flightsim.to | Madolo+B21

Good idea kaha300d… works great!.. thanks.
However, I look forward to the near future… when hopefully the need for “workarounds” will be greatly reduced or possibly even nonexistent.

ok, but still remember that this is a FREE glider, and (in my opinion) the best one in the sim. Your posts could be seen as demanding an update by B21/Madolo, and as I mentioned it’s not zero-impact for everyone else who has not changed their configs…

Thanks @MSGamerTag01 for jumping in - and thanks for all those training videos

Ok, I agree that the AS33 is the the best glider in the sim, which is obvious to most any rl glider pilot, and which is why it has always been my favorite glider. Moreover, just to be clear, please be advised that I am most definitely not demanding (seriously?) any updates from B21/Madolo, both of whom I’ve always had the deepest respect and admiration for. Enough is enough. Please stop spinning this thread into something that it is not. I appreciate it. Besides, my original inquiry was answered a resolved a couple days ago by kaha300d. Enough already. Bye.

Hi folks, thanks for the support!, I feel the warmth. The AS33 has always been intended as kind-of an exemplar of what’s possible in MSFS in part to raise the aspirations of all glider developers including Asobo. The feedback is generous but appreciated. I guess there’s a trade-off that making this glider popular creates an expectation of the top-spec tech in all the gliders (someone asked me to put a similar nav instrument into the K7) but I hope pilots do spend quality time in all the gliders in MSFS because really we’re in pretty good shape with the aircraft and the differences are something to be valued. The programming in the AS33 does ripple down but we shouldn’t overdo it with the panel.

Here’s today’s snapshot from the AS33, where the top-left Nav knob now scrolls through multiple map types. Same principle as always, if you climb in the cockpit and click nothing, everything still does something sensible, but as you learn the cockpit you’ll find you can be predicting arrival heights at waypoints, optimal speeds to fly, and all sorts of clever ■■■■. This nav update will be included with more routine other stuff like migration to MSFS ballast and launches mentioned earlier, no guarantees but I reckon within a month. Credit to CaptnJackBilbo who added an extra map to the AS33 as a mod of my code and prompted me to pull my finger out.

just adding a real user reply here so it doesn’t get closed. I know B21 is working on an update, I’ve seen his comment above and also elsewhere. It’s coming folks

lol thanks for the bump @auspoundy - I hadn’t thought of that. Yes I’m working on the update. The map selection is taking the most time, making sure everything lines up including North-Up. I’ve improved the contrast of the add-on maps as the cockpit is a lot sunnier than the desktop. The basic MSFS launching is done, that’s just a config tweak and fiddling with the coordinates for Jimmy and the cable connections. Two more weeks… probably.

I know a friend has tried the JackBilbo github update for the LXN, and found the map readability an issue for his eyesight, so knowing you are spending time optimising that is reassuring ! As I’ve said elsewhere and often, thank you for the things you have done, and continue to do, for our community!

Yay, well done! What was it? A collider?

I thought if HAD to be the collision mesh for months, there’s nothing else on the plane that cares what surface the plane is on… but my assumption was wrong and Asobo put me straight within 48 hours of me posting my issue with their dev support. The AS33 build started immediately after MSFS 2020 came out, and I’d copied [EFFECTS] from some stock aircraft (maybe even the SDK SimpleAircraft) into the AS33 project. Some of those effects DO interact with the ground, such as the one that kicks up dust on landing, and the AS33 still had some problematic Asobo effect which they had presumably replaced on their planes, combined with a separate MSFS issue (i.e. bug) that once the FPS hit was incurred, that stayed with you for the entire flight.

So it was a pretty tricky issue, and I never suspected the [EFFECTS] (they could care about grass? really?). But I was hugely impressed that Asobo took my AS33 package, replicated the issue, and got back to me with the cause. I wouldn’t have expected that level of support from a business with such a huge franchise to support.

Heh, that is a weird one. Great that they helped though. I think they love gliders now!

Just took it for a ride. Didn’t read the notes, had a heart attack when the Cessna was there to tow me. Thought it was a bug. good job mate.

yeah, credit to Asobo - I really like their aerotow support, certainly adds a lot to gliding in the sim. Sure it could be refined a bit, but the basics are great IMHO. I’ve just updated the LS4 with the same support and am doing the K7 now.

Hey there,

thanks for this awesome glider!

I am binge-watching youtube videos about gliders/soaring in the last month and was flying the Asobo-Gliders mainly. Now this is on another level, and so far I really like it.

Is there a recommended tutorial I can watch or read regarding Flaps-Settings in Gliders? I have found out that the A Setting is for aerotow and that T1 and T2 are “Thermal-Settings” but not much more… I watched Ian Lewis videos, but they are mainly about the “How-to do something” in the glider not about “Why and when to do something”, if you know what I mean…

Thanks

Here is a video on flaps that you might find useful.

I downloaded the AS33 glider from flightsim.com, but my standard cockpit view is in an unusable wide view… What is wrong? All my other aircraft and gliders have a normal cockpit view! Thanks.

@MRTNAIRLINES

Can’t you simply zoom in with your scroll wheel if it is to wide for you?

Has anyone created a paint kit for the AS33? I do not see any 3rd party liveries on flightsim.to. I tried to create a kit myself in Blender but I’m not very experienced with that so I must be doing something wrong because I cannot get it to include the flaps.

I’ve managed to incorporate most of the good liveries into updates for the main package (on flightsim.to - check them out), so everyone has them and multiplayer doesn’t crap out with the AS33 appearing as a Bonanza.

I forget if there’s a paint kit - if there is it’ll be at the base of the package folder. Otherwise it’s pretty easy to just look at one of the awesome liveries that’ve been added to the package and the DDS files in that will tell you exactly which files map to the fuselage/wings.

There’s a couple of glitches in the AS33 glider model - the nose has a glitchy area and so do the undercarriage doors. We built the plane when MSFS 2020 first came out, to get a good glider in the sim ASAP, and it was the first-ever Blender model build for Madolo.
