El Chaltén Aeroclub Alf. G.N.A. Walter Omar D’Anna. LAD 5138
In the untamed yet beautiful Argentine Patagonia, nestled in a remote corner, lies the charming town of El Chaltén, known worldwide as “the national capital of trekking in Argentina.” This is due to the immeasurable beauty of its Andean landscapes, surrounded by lakes, glaciers, and, of course, the renowned Mount Fitz Roy, which graces every photograph taken there.
The El Chaltén Aeroclub (officially El Chaltén Aeroclub Alf. G.N.A. Walter Omar D’Anna) was founded on October 12, 2004. The aeroclub has been a fundamental support for the development of local air connectivity, as well as for both domestic and international tourist flights to the area. The club’s significant health operations and operational management in the province of Santa Cruz are noteworthy, as are its important charitable campaigns and free training programs for residents, bringing recreation and development to this beautiful town.
The club plays a crucial role in supporting logistical operations during forest fires. Its makeshift gravel and dirt airstrip serves as the only operations center for firefighting aircraft. Thanks to the installation of a new 100,000-liter water tank, the aircraft can be refilled, allowing them to continue fighting the fires. Thanks to all the club’s efforts, and despite limited resources, the Aeroclub has enabled El Chaltén to open itself to the world. It is hoped that government authorities will soon support the construction of a new civil airfield, allowing the full tourism potential of the area, alongside the imposing Mount Fitz Roy, to be realized.
